Just get a smaller/good mileage coupe. You want somthing low on insurance (assuming you just turned 16 the rate is very high) and low on gas.

I want to get a truck but the value of them seems to be higher value and i lose a lot of money on more mileage. I have about 6000 to spend and I have been thinking of getting a Pontiac with a 440 and fixing it up a lot. I will get a older car and fix it up and make it a nice car again but i dont know what car i should get to fix up. PLease give me your input.

The way gas prices are going you would be better off getting an econo car.  Trust me man.  Paying $40 for a tank of gas is not something you want if you are broke and that's not even the cost of premium gas which is what you would want for a higher performance machine.

Get a Caprice... they are the only american cars that you can drop a bomb on that will keep goin, LOL,  take mine for example... it just rolled over 200,000 miles... granted 17 mpg in the city ain't great, but if you like grocery cart hunting like I do you'll love a caprice... and $6000 is no-where near poor, i don't want to hear that kinda shit around here ever again... I'm not poor and I had way less than that to spend on my first car... rolleyes.gif

I agree.  The most I have spent on a car so far is $3600.  dry.gif   Then again unlike some people I don't see the need to get a loan just so I can drive a cool car and then spend the rest of my time working my ass off to make payments on it.  I understand that sometimes you don't have a choice but I think too many people are eager to jump on the car-loan bandwagon when it isn't necessary.  Just because you are getting a more expensive vehicle doesn't mean it will be better.  Case and Point:  My GF got a loan for $7K to invest in a '95 Honda Civic since they are supposed to be reliable.  I invested $3600 on my '88 RX-7 and payed for it up front.  Bottom line.  In the last year she has spent more on maintenece on her car than I have on mine and she is still making payments on it.  Take a look at the person who owned the car before you did (did they keep records and were they meticulous about maintaining it) and above all don't go to a dealership unless you are getting some kind of warranty.  They will just rip you off.

Also, never buy a car that's been owned by a kid or has mods of any sort on it. It just screams, "I've been beat". Take anything you look at to a trusted mechanic and have him spend half an hour to an hour going over it thoroughly. Better to pay 50 bucks to find out a car's a lemon then drop a few grand on it and find it out a few weeks later.

You don't want a muscle car, trust me.

Just get a mid 90s import.

That would be a good choice.  Relatively fuel efficient, 4 seater capacity and plenty of trunkspace.  They also rated very high in consumer reports.

Consumer reports is VERY biased. I trust Edmunds far more.
