Best Router To Use To Link 4 Xboxes And Share...
« on: October 02, 2005, 11:54:00 PM »

What do you guys recommend for a good router in order to share internet with my pc and my xbox at the same time and also have 4 xboxes hooked up to the router so I can play link halo.  What router's are good out there?  I know I need straight through cables in order to hook up with a router. Also my modem uses a straight through... I am looking for a decent router and one that will have least lag time.  Thanks for lettin me know what you guys have used, use, and what you suggest out there.

well what you want isnt a "router" at all. that name gets over used.

what you want is a 6 or 8 port switch. any will do, no need to spend a lot on them

you can buy "routers" (i have no idea why). they are a shit laod more expensive, and do little more then allow you to setup a firewal.

Ever tried to connect a switch directly to a dsl/cable modem?! Routers do much more than "setting a firewall"! You *must have* a router to access an internet connection with more than 1 device, no matter if xbox or pc or whatever. They do things like NAT and basically they transfer ethernet to pppoe.

You *will* need a router, unless your DSL/Cable modem includes that functionality.  (many do not!)

Most routers include four wired ports.  In your case, you'll be wanting five wired ports (4 Xbox and 1 PC.)  So just pick up a cheap hub/switch (with an uplink port) as well and plug this into one of the ports of your router.

Even if the hub doesnt have an uplink you can still get it to work with a crossover cable.

just pick up a "cable/dsl" router, and a 5 port switch... please, for the love of collisions, dont get a hub...

also, a router is not just a switch with a firewall, its worth the extra 15 dollars for the DHCP server that is built in, it will make the xboxing alot easier on you, and the PC as well. and the firewall is not really a feature, its more along the lines of you dont have a choice in the matter, cause with out NAT, you have nothing but a switch...
