XBMC

its a homebrew app for the xbox designed especially to do exactly what you want to do with it

using samba (windows shared folders) you can stream any media conect from a networked PC

the quality of ripped dvd playback from a PC is as good as the rip itself, so no worries there

once youve used XBMC youll wonder how you ever dealt with anything else

Yep. XBMC = XBOX MEDIA CENTER. It's all you need. You might want to get at least a 60GB HDD in there though, so you don't always have to have your PC on. That's up to you though.

lol, I agree, XBMC is the best. An Xbox in my opinion is not an Xbox without media player. When I first started using it, I kicked myself for not trying it out earlier. I now use it as my main dashboard.

Definately try it out. It will do everything you'll ever want plus more. There is always new versions coming out with small updates/bug fixes and new enhancements.

1.  Do I need worry about getting a certain version of the XBox or can I just walk into my local electronic store and grab one off the shelf?

xbmc has the most awesome and complete codec set ive ever seen in one player, the only thing ive ever had difficulty playing (audio and video would get out of synch) is realmedia files (.rm) and those were really crappy lo-res anyway so i just deleted the files and found better ones

i think intalling a codec is as simple as just copying an dpasting the files into the codec folder, but i really dont know as ive never come across anything it wouldnt play (except those lousy .rms)

This Pinned Topic has become an invaluable resource for me.  It has network help, skins help, ... most everything you want to know about XBMC.

Also, in your first post you mentioned not having a noisy PC in your living room.  The Xbox isn't that quiet out of the box.  I would recommend installing an 80 mm fan.  This should help with the noise if it bothers you.
