Samsung Dvd Drive Laser Soh-dx1
« on: September 04, 2005, 08:57:00 AM »

It doesn't look like it. You might be better off buying a whole DVD drive. That's what I had to do. I emailed many vendors and looked at auctions for weeks, trying to find the dx1 laser. I eventually just bought a new drive.

You have the Samsung 605, version A? That's what mine is, manufactured July 2004. Weird. A lot of these have gone bad I've heard. Sucks.

I emailed the guy of the ebay auction asking whether the laser will work in my drive and he said that it will work. But I am not sure whether he knows about the different Samsung laser out there. To tell you the truth, I don't either.

I still cannot find a description of the difference between a Samsung 605 version A and version B drive. How do I know which one I have?

Thanks,
Alex

Just buy a new Thompson. It's cheaper than a new laser and will likely outlast your use of the Xbox. Hell buy two of them if you really want longevity (and it'll still be cheaper than a new laser). Pandoraxbox sells them for $20 a piece + shipping (shipping on 5 cost me $10). Call me nuts if you want, but a new drop in drive is worth far more than dealing with a laser replacement that may or may not work.

Try a pot tweak first.

I have 3 Samsung drives (2 version B and 1 version A).  All 3 (Manufactured around July 2004) have the SOH-DX1 laser, and all 3 are crap.  no amount of POT tweaking has allowed the drives to read DVDs, although the POT tweaking has allowed each of the drives to now read CDs.  I personally think all Samsungs are crap unless you use them for non-OEM recording media ("backed-up" games).  They are severely overpriced and just the SOH-D12 and SOH-D16 lasers are very expensive too.  I have not been able to find a SOH-DX1 laser at all.

I agree with Kermit007 about the Thomson drives.  I have replaced a bunch of Samsungs with Thomson drives because at least when a Thomson starts to fail you can restore most of the functionality with a good cleaning.  The Samsungs just remain NFG (no friggen good).

The only other remedy I can think of is to get you hands on a broken SOH-D12 or SOH-D16 drive and buy a new matching laser.  Or get a circuit board from a broken SOH-D12 or SOH-D16 drive and install it in your drive with a matching laser.  Probably better just to get a new Thomson drive though because they are so cheap on eBay.

Thanks for listening.
