I Need 1 Person To Explain To Me In Full Detail
« on: September 02, 2005, 07:20:00 PM »

ive read thru almost every post on the scene about data corruption when you move to a 400gb+ harddrive.  Ive heard that you will no matter whta have data loss, ive heard you might have data loss, and ive heard you wont have data loss.  I would like 1 person to explain to me in detail if i will have data loss!

With 16kb clusters, any partition above 256gb will result in data corruption whenever you use the space after the 256th gb.  If you use XBpartitioner, then you can change the cluster size to 32kb, so that a partition can have up to 512gb...This  is all due to the limitations of FatX

You must change the cluster size to 32kb (I think that xbpartitioner automatically does this for you).  If you don't use xbpartitioner to change the cluster size, then data corruption will occur.

I asked this very question about 2 months ago re 320GB hard disk. The answer is quite right as stated above, use Xbpartioner stick it in your apps folder, you may need to maually run the .xbe using avalaunch file manager for some reason (I have to anyway, but actually it means it's much safer i.e kids can't accidentally run it LOL).

It's not very user friendly or intuitive but the instructions are there. I think it's the white button and then Y to toggle 16k or 32k clusters (I did this two days ago and I'm going from memory) after you've toggled your partition options etc 1st.

You want one dirty big F: I assume, then you'll need the right bios as well. I use x2 4983.06 or x2 5032.06.

Cheers,

as to whether or not you have data loss heres the breakdown:

using F and G (.67 bios) = no data loss, both partitions below 256gb

using large F (.06 bios) formatting with slayers, unleashx, FTP, etc = data loss for data placed on the drive past the 256gb mark

using large F (.06 bios) and formatting with xbpartitoner = no data loss (will automatically use 32k clusters)

and BTW, the reason it wont show up in the apps folder is because either A: you just threw it straight in the apps fodler instead of making its own forlder for it, or B: becuase its not named default.xbe (its xbpartitoner.xbe)

Slightly OT, and sorry for that. But I'm using an X2 4983.67 and wanted to install something more current. Is the 5032 256k?

No, 5032 / 5035 is 512kb big.  You will need a chip that can take it, like an X2/X3, SmartXX, and the like.

I didn't know xbpartitioner set 32k clusters automatically on format of large drives, but then I choose to make damn sure I got 32k clusters by setting it manually as I couldn't wait for 230GB of stuff to FTP across before finding it was corrupted again as that takes like a whole day or more LOL.

Cheers,
