My Xbox Was Electrocuted
« on: August 29, 2005, 04:23:00 PM »

Hey everyone.  I need some advice.

Recently we had an electrical storm where I live.  Unfortunately for me, lightning struck our house and ruined some electronics.

My xbox was one of them.  :(

I've called around to a bunch of local shops, and no one will touch it because it's modded.

I have a suspicion that the only problem with my xbox is that power supply is fried.  I opened up the system yesterday and inspected.  There was no visible damage that I could see.

The system will not power on at all.

Do you guys think a new power supply will solve this problem, or are the chances good that my entire system is shot to hell?

If anyone can give me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it!

It probably blew the fuse on your power supply. Nothing major.
A new fuse and a bit of soldering should do the trick.

If you're not comfortable soldering, you can buy a new PSU.

After installing a new PSU, you may not be able to connect to Xbox Live (or anywhere else), but that's another issue related to electrical storms. Right now your primary concern is getting your xbox up & running again.

I have no experience soldering, so I'm gonna have to buy a new PSU I guess.  Seems easy enough to replace, I just can't find one anywhere.

Any suggestions?

Check your motherboard version, then post a thread in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here on Xbox-Scene.

You can also check ebay, but they're usually cheaper when you buy here on X-S.

Where do I check to see what version mother board I have?  I would gladly buy it off you if it's the right one.

It's either a 1.4 or 1.5

I followed the tutorial, but the last step to determin whether it's 1.4 or 1.5 apparently requires a tool I don't have.

Check the Buy/Sell/Trade forum for someone selling a 1.2-1.5 PSU.
