Broken Surface Mount Resistor
« on: August 23, 2005, 05:56:00 PM »

I was swappin cases of a 1.6 mobo the other day, and after i had about 4 screws into the mobo i realized what i had done.  So, i crossed my fingers, removed the screws, and sure enough i broke off that little resistor.  Luckily i have a broken mobo lying around (a 1.0 or 1.1), and so i can transplant one of the surface mount resistors.  But how do i determine which of the many has the same rating, surely i cant just pick any one thats the same color?!  I do have a couple multimeters lying around, but i dont exactly recall how to use them anymore...not since high school have i used one frequently.  Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
sheriffdane

i recommend using networkboy's component encyclopedia at http://xbx.networkboy.net.  you'll have to create a free membership to access the encyclopedia..but its worth it.  just look up the location and it'll give you the value.

hope that helps

no luck, not listed in the in the encyclopedia.  Might be too basic for it?  Its component C5N3 on the 1.6.  Its worth noting that C5N3 in the 1.1 is similar looking, but larger.  Im guessing the C denotes capacitor?  Its a little beige lego-block-looking surface mount component.  2 soldr points, one on each end, and it is quite small, but not the smallest of its type on the board.  There are at least 30 that look exactly like it on either board version, and it comes in 4 or 5 different sizes as well.  Im 'bout to bust out my multimeter and try to figure out how the hell to use it again.

Please help!

What a great job nB, That took a lot of ambition, I was thinking of doing the same but just can't get the time to do it right now.

Three thumbs up m8!
