QUOTE (Morpheus99 @ Feb 10 2003, 07:07 AM)
Since I haven't been able to find a complete list of harddisks and the ability to lock them I think it's a good idea to compile a list so that if someone wants to buy a new hd he/she knows what will / won't lock and won't lose money by buying a hd and find out by trying.

Please reply to this message with the Brand, ModelNumber, Size, RPM, Buffersize and Lockability of your harddisk.

My hd is

Maxtor, 4D080H4. 80Gb, 5400, 2Mb, not lockable (tried with ConfigMagic)

Hey!

Whats the idead of lockability? Why should I know this before buying a hdd?

Some people have had luck with the WD120GB SE, and others have not.

I got the Maxtor 120GB from BestBuy, and it is lockable.

I have a Maxtor 80 gig 5400 2mb and it was locked.  I dunno the exact model number though, but I used EEPromer to do it.  Works on live!

From what I gather the WD SE 120gb OEM drives don't lock (some people claim to have locked it but most say it can' t be done), but the boxed, retail WD SE drive appears to be OK.  Don't hold me to that, but it's what I gather from about a month's worth of research (not actually tested though).

Just bought a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 120Gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM (6Y120P0) and I understand it DOES lock.  Will confirm on arrival and installation.

Cheers,

-Steve.

I have the retail version of the drive and it won't lock.

Which do you have, Mastershredder? The WD or the Maxtor?

(Sorry for getting off topic)

Sorry to spoil the great list of drives on this post, but I have to confess something really stupid.
(and I know I am going to regret asking this) but what does it matter if a drive locks or not? When you say 'lockable', what does this mean? The reason I am asking these stupid questions, is I was thinking of putting a bigger HDD in my xbox, but havent got a clue where to start! Can it be a standard HDD that would normally go in a pc, and if so, does it have to be formatted in any particular way(before or after it is fitted)? Any help here, or directions to a tutorial on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Just got my maxtor 120gb 7200 from best buy(100gb+20gb free) and locked it! woohoo!
Now I can try live!

That is why you want to get a hard drive that Locks, so you can still boot with MS bios and play games on live. With out a locked drive your xbox will say it needs fixed!
