V1.0 Xbox With Blown Capacitor - But Still Works?
« on: August 02, 2005, 03:11:00 PM »

Someone gave me their XBox to mod... I powered it up and it appeared to work as normal.  After opening the case, I noticed that the lower right capacitor is violently blown (scorch marks on the bottom tray, scorch marks on the mother board, etc...) - yet the Xbox still works.

Can anyone tell me what this capacitor does and why the Xbox still appears to function normally?

For reference, the capacitor is the lowest one in the left hand corner of the motherboard, if you're looking at it from the top front.

Here's a mini-text diagram, I hope it turns out:

OOO   o
........o
........o...o
-----^^
This is the blown capacitor

The three big "O"s are the big capacitors  on the left of the motherboard.  The little "o"s are the other capcitors in that vicinity.  Of all the caps on the motherboard, the blown one is the lowest one on the left.

Anyone got any ideas?

if you know how to solder, get a replacement cap and solder it in.

I have seen that cap leak or blow out in a bunch of systems.  Most times it does a bunch of damage to the board (causes the layers to flake apart).   I cant help ya with your question, but that is a very common problem.  Just another factory defect.  From the damage I have seen on some boards I cant believe someones house hasnt burned down because of this.

Electrolyte leaking out of the capacitor or even the top bulging out is hardly likely to cause a fire in a low voltage area on the motherboard
