Ftp An Xbox Out Of State?

QUOTE(xboxgamer733 @ Aug 1 2005, 07:18 PM)
I've been wanting to remotely access my Xbox for a long time now, and I just can't seem to get it working. Here are what my router settings look like (sorry for the large image):

(IMG:http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a194/xboxgamer733/xboxgoodness2.jpg)

Of course, my router assigned my Xbox the IP address '192.168.2.5'.

I've also tried to put the Xbox in the DMZ, but that didn't help. Is there anything else that I can try?

ok well ftp uses TCP, so teh UDP one isnt necessary. check the settings for the firwall of the router, thats what's stopping me.

Yeah, I was figuring that the firewall was stopping me. I'll mess with it and see if that helps anything.

Also, try adding the xbox's IP address to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). Look around for the settings for your DMZ, and add your xbox's IP to it. It pretty much disables the firewall rules to your xbox. And that won't hurt anything, because your xbox can't have any viruses or hackers.

I've tried putting the Xbox in the DMZ, but it didn't work, either.

Thanks for the suggestion, though  smile.gif

just to let you guys know, i tried to do this, and it didnt work. had the port (210 forwaded, but it just came back with 'conenction refused' at the otehr end.

i have a feelign it was something to do with teh firewall in the router though. i have sent an email to the manufacturer (d-link) about it, and ill jet you know what they say.

I'm assuming you meant port 21. Make sure it's TCP and not UDP.

Also, let me point out that you don't need static IPs for the remote ftp access to work. There are several free dynamic DNS providers around that let you automotically register your dynamic IP, as soon as it changes.

For all the people having problems with port forwarding, it probably requires a case-by-case solution, but it's generally because of firewalls at some point in the network. You should try using a computer instead of the xbox, if it makes the troubleshooting any easier. Try briefly disabling the firewall and see if that works...

Don't bet on that ;P
I would never leave anything connected to the network completely unprotected by firewall, tcp wrappers, MAC filters, IP filters, etc...

I've thought that, too, so I changed the FTP port (in UnleashX) from 21 to 1234, and forwarded port 1234 in the router. Still, I can't access the Xbox.

I guess you're out 10 bucks now!  biggrin.gif

Well... if you aren't stupid enough to use your main ftp login with all privelages to be publicly hosting files so ppl can know your main login/pass, then there should be no problem.

So just add another user to the FileZillaServer.xml in XBMC to have read only privelages to only certain drives/folder, not including C: and your apps folders so they can't see your xml or setting files to find out your main password.

But then again... now that I think about it. Someone could connect to your xbox via ftp and send it a raw command to format the HD. So ya I guess it would be a bad idea, but then again... aren't raw commands sent through ftp still sent over tcp 21? So there's nothing you can do unless you block that port, but then ftp wouldn't be possible... so I guess that's just a risk that you have to take.
But also, if someone did do this, you could look at your xbmc ftp logs to get their ip and report them, because what they did was illegal...

Meh... I dunno...

for all the people forwarding and dmz'ing properly and not being able to connect to their xbox here is the problem.  your ISP probably blocks that port.  i know cox blocks ftp, pop3 and http.  so if anyone on cox wants to run any type of server, you have to do it on a different port than the default.  other than that, the xbox is capable of doing everything that everyone is trying.  however, i'd rather leave my pc on and set up Apache for an http server, but that might just be me ;p

EDIT: bah, i didn't realize someone already said it might be getting blocked.  my bad :)
