Connection Issue: Ftp Slowdown When Uploading
« on: July 24, 2005, 05:10:00 PM »

Oi. I had originally posted this as a FlashFXP problem, but now I worry my troubles go way beyond that.

Basically, I can FTP into my Xbox and move things around, delete, edit, whatever. No matter which client I use (FlashFXP, CuteFTP, SmartFTP, etc.) I can pull FROM the Xbox to PC with no difficulties.

However, when I try to upload TO the Xbox, various things happen. In FlashFXP, the program hangs. In SmartFTP and CuteFTP, I begin at a normal rate (8-14mb/s), and the connection speed is slowly decreased and throttled down to nothingness, or close to.

I have ruled out this being a router or PC issue (have tried multiple PC connections through a router, as well as connecting the xbox directly to two different PCs using crossover cable.)

So apparently the trouble is on the Xbox's end. I originally tried it with the latest EvoX, and I recently switched to the latest Avalaunch, thinking that might solve the problem, but it didn't.

Now, I haven't installed any new programs in between the time when it worked fine (yes, it used to work fine, used FlashFXP for everything, never had any problems) and now, when it stopped working. I ripped some of my games onto the HDD with dvd2xbox, but I doubt that could make a difference (pointed right to F: where settings, etc. are on C:) I have, however, taken the xbox on a road trip, albeit inside a padded case specially designed for this purpose. Even then it was barely used.

So my question is: does anyone know what's going on? Is my ethernet port degraded or broken somehow? Even then, why would I get perfect speeds transferring OFF the Xbox? Is there some setting somewhere that lets me control the speed of transfer? What, in short, the hell is going on? Any help would certainly be appreciated; I've been going nuts about this all day.

Would just like to say that even trying to upload ISOs through Qwix, I get the same thing. Transfers begin at about 4 mb/s, and gradually slow down from there.

Are you using Evox, Avalaunch or XBMC for connecting to the xbox?

As mentioned above, I tried both EvoX and Avalaunch. I don't have XBMC as a dashboard, would loading it up as a program and attempting it then make any difference?

Just a note that no, XBMC does not make a difference, either. I'm really dying here. No one has any ideas?

If you've tried different cables, I think it sounds like there's something wrong with your ethernet jack on the xbox.  Different wires are used for sending and recieving.

Would that explain, do you think, why it always starts off strong but fizzles out? You'd think it would never connect at high speed, if that were it. And the transfers at the speed go through, as well. It's not like the program is trying to go fast, then falling into what it "can" do. I just really don't get it.

I keep missing my window to edit posts. Gah. The Ethernet port looks fine, and I swabbed it with alcohol and checked its connection to the motherboard, also fine. I don't think it would connect at all, and certainly wouldn't have this odd, steady decrease if it were a hardware problem. Or at least as simple one as a busted wire. *sigh*

Have you tried other computers?  Or at least tried rebooting your computer?  It could be a problem at that end.

Again, if you'll read the original post, yes, I've tried different computers. I've tried crossover, I've tried the router with my PC, I've tried router through a laptop, and I've tried crossover from that laptop.

Basically: assume I have tried everything that would immediately spring to mind. That's why I need some serious help.

yeah, sorry about that... re-read the original post after I posted and was too lazy to edit my post...  but anyway, it looks like there's something wrong with your network jack.  Don't know what options there are for you other than replacing the motherboard.

Well, both comptuers have ZoneAlarm security suite installed on them, but both of them were turned off. I suppose there's a possibility that ZoneAlarm had done something overall to the computer's settings that would make it slowdown. I'll try uninstalling that and see where it gets me.

Edit: I uninstalled ZoneAlarm, and turned on Avalaunch Boost mode. Whichever one of those did it; I'm holding steady at 56 mb/s!! Holy crap!

This went out the other side of fixed. Thanks for all your help, guys. To anyone experiencing similar problems (I know there were a few) try uninstalling your anti-virus stuff to see if it makes a difference. Even if it's not running, it could've altered your system settings.

software firewalls are EVIL!! and also any other program that controls spyware (norton internet security) is EVIL!!! get rid of them, make the proper rules on your router to handle traffic and use that only, it works fine as long as you don't run any services on standard ports.  i can't tell you how many times i've gone to fix someone's computer and a software firewall was to blame.

For others who may be having a problem. I was using a Dlink DI-624 router and I could connnect and transfer a couple of files but then I would get disconnected and be unable to connect again until I restarted.
Here is how I fixed it.

Log into your DI-624 router and go to the LAN tab. There you will see "DNS Relay" Turn it OFF and let your router reboot and try. You will no longer get disconnected. hope this helps someone
