Possible Psu Issue
« on: July 18, 2005, 11:01:00 PM »

Well currently I'm having an issue with my unmodded xbox that I use for XBL. On Sunday night my friend and I stayed up all night playing Doom3 co-op and Halo 2 till about 5am with no issue.

Later today I turn my xbox on and start playing Halo 2. After five minutes the xbox shuts itself off. I go to turn it back on and nothing.

I have my controller connecter modded with a led and it just flashed red for a second and then nothing. The power button didn't even turn green or start fragging.

Left it alone for about half an hour and samething. Worked for five minutes then shut off not coming back on right after that.

Didn't crack it open since I had to go to work soon after but just looking for possible suggestions of what the issue maybe.

Thanks.

Yesterday there were some power outages in my part of Phoenix even though I myself didn't experience any.

But I had tried a different power cable in the same power surge strip and also directly into the wall outlet (two different rooms). It still had the same issue though.

Well I work tech overnight and just now getting off of work. As far as I know everyone's power is fine now so I'll go home and see if it's still the same.

It was doing it yesterday morning and last night before I went to work.

Since there was a power outage, then the power could be low level until they get the full grid back up, not just "fixed" by diverting some power in one place to another.  If this keeps happening, you may want to try a battery backup for a PC to run to the xbox.

low voltages will cause crazy effects and it isn't something you will suspect.  sort of like RAM, it causes all kinds of adverse effects.

Well it seems as though it was a power issue. I left my xbox on while working in photoshop for an hour and it didn't shut off.

Thanks for the help guys.  smile.gif

I was gonna be pissed if it was my actual xbox cuz I just got the battlefield 2 demo and needed my fix.

Brought this thread back since I started having the same issue again.

It had been working just fine the whole week and then this morning after turning it on five minutes later it shut off.

Hitting the power button didn't do anything.

Got pissed and stopped trying. Then tonight I got my XBL Arcade cd. Played Ms Pac-Man for almost an hour and turned it off.

Hour later started to play Halo 2 and it turned its self off again. Unplugged from the power strip and directly into the wall outlet. Still no.

Tried in the other room in the power strip and wall still wouldn't turn on.

Done some searching and I don't seem to be having any syptoms of a typical psu issue. It doesn't ask me to reset the date whenever it does this.

Anyway it seems random with no rhym or reason.  grr.gif

Anymore suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I did look at the psu but have never really messed with them. Didn't see anything that stood out though.

So the only requirement for the psu is that it just has to be same version as your xbox right, nothing else special?

Never bothered to check the version for this xbox since I was never gonna mod it. I have two other boxes so I'll see if any of those match and swap them out if so.

If the case is that I need a new psu can you suggest a good online store to get one cheap?

Thanks again!

Np just thought you might know since you're the X-S Messiah.  biggrin.gif

Could be worst, at least it just seems to be a psu issue and as you mentioned they should be cheap.

Thanks for the help again though and I'll check into that.  beerchug.gif
