Slimline Laptop Dvd - Has It Been Done
« on: July 13, 2005, 06:36:00 PM »

Confused after reading this (below)... but I used the slayer 2.6 CD.... Maybe I need to put back my original backup files. Doesn't seem likely though.... I'll check any other useful hints let me know If not I'll post as much info hear so that if anyone else goes down this road they will get a head start.

13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.

[Details]

This is an error thats most common when you have changed something on your xbox harddisk drive for whatever reason you had, but did not do it properly.

So what to solve it? Well, try to rebuild you xbox harddisk (retail or upgraded/large)
with a slayer 2.6 cd.

(BUT WATCH OUT READ MORE ABOUT THIS ERROR 13 BEFORE YOU DO THAT!) .

The thing you should understand is that error 13 is only because something is wrong with the files on your xbox harddisk.

UPDATE: Recently more and more xbox's that i started modding were giving me an error 13 when i booted in original mode. So what the hell was going on. Solder work was great, the slayer cd was also working great.

However i started doing some research and i finally figured it out. The error it gives is because of the incompatibility between the (older) dashboard (4920) that older slayer cd installs and the new dashboard/kernel versions found in some new xbox's and found in xbox's that have been connected to xbox live (when you go on xbox-live, it'll upgrade your dashboard file to i believe it is now 5659.03. This dasboard is incompatible with the dash that (old) slayer cd installs (for example 2.5 or lower) for you.

(In detail, in the eeprom chip there is a kernel which is incompatible with the dashboard (4920) that slayer installs.)

So what do you do to fix it? Well, it's easy. Someone may know how to do this more easy but this is how i did it. I got myself an xbox of a friend that has xbox live. His xbox is modified and runs a executor chip. I checked his dashboard version and i saw it was the latest 5659.03 dashboard. So i connected his xbox to my computer and i transferred his complete c:\ partition to my computer. Than i connected the xbox that gave me an error 13 when booting original, to my computer. AFter that i transferred "his" c:\ partition to my own c:\ partition, when it asked me to overwrite i chose all. After transfer was done, i rebooted the xbox. And voila no more error 13. The incompatibility was gone.

I think you have to transfer all the xboxdash files and also the xboxdashdata (or something like that) folder. In case you hate to experiment, just transfer the complete c:\ partition of a fairly new or upgraded xbox to your c:\ partition and overwrite all.

Ah well, hope it helps someone.

*UPDATE*
It seems there is an easier solution. You can use the dashupdate found on most new xbox games! Be sure to 1st unplug your ethernet cable before you do so!!!

*UPDATE2*
Besides that, just use a good installation disc and all is fine. Use a 2.6 slayer or something similar

I've got two toshiba laptop drives, id like to get one of them to work in a lowrider slimcase i built.  Im about to rebuild the case of the lowrider anyways, and i woul dbe very happy to integrate one of these dvd drives.  Any resources you could point me too?  Also, what adapter did you use to connect the notebook dvd drives to the ide cable?

Thanks

Im aware of the standard notebook ide interfaces for both hard drives and removable storage drives, but im curious where you found YOUR adapter.  I've got adapters for 2.5" hard drives, but i havent come across an adapter for the dvd drives yet.  Additionally, i do believe that it is possible to use a notebook drive to read all types of media BESIDES xbox originals, but i hope this is incorrect.  Im pretty sure its true, though.  Let me know what you find.

I tried a HL GGC-4124n (Dell Laptop DVD) last night in my in car xbox project but it wouldn’t work. Like you said it must be the CS/Master/Slave settings as a full size PC – DVD rom works fine.

I'm going to try a Samsung SN-324 tonight...fingers crossed....

Guys..... I am quite sure all slimline DVD drives have a setting for master/slave. I know myself because I proved to a friend u can pretty much put ANY slimline DVD drive in any laptop its just a quick change of the harness, guess what? didnt boot first time. looked at the drive realllllly close and found a TINY very TINY switch. it will be there, its a OLD drive and it had one. I am sure any drive after mine was made (1998) will have one.

Hi WorstEVERR,

I’ve stripped both drives and no switch!

I know what you mean laptop drives are normally plug and play and when the Samsung drive is installed in my Laptop it's on the secondary IDE channel, But the xbox dose not seem to “see” the drive properly.

As far as I know Slim drives and normal PC-DVD drives behave in the same way - so why is the xbox having such a hard time using it??!?!?!? Like I said before a full size drive works fine.

Maybe I should ring MS Helpdesk and ask them  tongue.gif

I don't know much about laptop DVD-ROM drives, especially not in an Xbox... idea sounds pretty good, though. To confirm some things: yes, it will read everything you throw at it except originals. Also, I doubt that it's easy to connect the 'extra' Xbox-signals to the drive.

If you can't find a switch on your DVD-drive, please try your drive in a normal computer with a (tested) IDE-cable, in combination with a normal hard disk. Put the hard disk on cable select and see if the DVD-ROM drive is doing the same (when hard disk is master, drive becomes slave - when hard disk is slave, drive becomes master, etc.).

Sorted!  beerchug.gif

The secret seems to be to replace the stock xbox cable with a Ultra ATA cable!

Both of my laptop drives work with the new cable.

No worries - but I'm not exactly an expert in the way of the xbox!

I have two xbox's

Home:-

Xbox ver - 1.2
Mod Chip - Smartxx ver 1
Bios - INDbios
HDD - 80 gig
DVD -Phillips with tweaked pots
Dash - Avalunch & XBMC
Case - White/grey paint - to match sky plus box! (Keeps the other half happy)
LCD (Green)
Built in wireless controller
Built in IR
IR power on/off mod

12v Fan upgrade

New Project - In car xbox.

Xbox ver - 1.2
Mod Chip - OPT Smartxx
Bios - M8plus - No DVD hack
HDD - Laptop 40 gig (2,5 to 3.5 adapter from www.mini-tx.com)
DVD - Samsung SN-324 slimdrive (with Ultra ATA cable! Laptop dvd to 3.5 adapter from www.mini-tx.com)
PSU - miniatx in car 90w power supply M1-ATX (http://www.mini-itx....-atx-manual.pdf)
Dash - Avalunch & XBMP (installed via Auotinstaller Deluxe 2.2)
Case - Custom small footprint and Metal so it can withstand being knocked about.
2x built in wireless controllers (Stops the kids arguing)
Built in IR
2x 40mm Fans (may change)

The project is still in it's early days and the PSU is untested as I'm waiting for the Apache xbox to atx psu adapter to arrive from tribal mods – But I think 90w will be ok as the laptop HDD\DVDs do not suck a great deal of power and as the psu is 12v I should be able to run the xbox out of the car buy using a mains adapter.

But like I said its early days! I will keep you updated.

Yes - I've had the Slimline DVD-Rom in my xbox and working in Avalunch and XBMC (Had to edit the xbmc config to tell it it was a PC DVD rom first)

Zep

The Samsung slimdrive reads and plays backed up games like a charm  biggrin.gif but no go with originals (Which is to be expected)  dry.gif

When I get more time I'm going to try and find the tray/open sensor and solder it in to the yellow cable....

No images yet? sad.gif

Did you get the eject button to work on your slimline? I'm thinking of replacing my dvd with an Sony Slimline DVD with slot-in function. No idea if it will work, but my thought is to do it the same way as you did. Using an adapter and Ultra-ATA cable. What is the difference between an Ultra-ATA and Ultra-DMA cable? The last one is more easier to find, also as with rounded cable. But i dont know if it will work with an Ultra-DMA cable, what do you think?
