Please Help Freezing Xbox
« on: July 08, 2005, 01:57:00 PM »

I have a 1.6v Xbox.  It is modded with a X3 chip.  When I load games in Retail or in Avalaunch you can play the game for a little bit then at random it will freeze.  I've looked at different post here in the forums but can't find any of them with certain answers.  Please help.  Any advice will help.
When you play Halo 2 it freezes fast, other games are a little slower to freeze.  Could it be a Overheat?  PLEASE HELP!

Thanks

Sorry for the slow response.  My Xbox has Hynix Memory.  I was running BIOS [3029] in my first post.  Since then, I've flashed with 3294.  (Hopefully, it cleans up some things.)  As for the Temp, not really sure.  It always freezes in game and I haven't looked at it afterwards.  I'll try tonight and get back to you.

FYI- I played Halo 2 for about 3 minutes then it froze and then I played NFS 2 for like 3 hours and nothing.

Thanks for the Help

I've had a similar problem before where certain games would just lock up after a while.

Theres a good chance your GPU is on the way out. To test this, if you can, feel the temprature of the GPU heatsink while the console is running (this is the heatsink just to the left of the CPU). If its quite hot to touch by the time your machine locks up, then its stuffed. (when i refer to quite hot, i mean >60 degrees C. It will probably be too hot to leave your finger on it for more than a few seconds)

To replace the GPU, its quite complex. The cheaper option usually is to scout around for a replacement motherboard. Have a look on e-bay. there are usually lots of people flogging bits and peices on there.

First thing you should always check when it freezes : Did you plug back your fan?
2.: Is your xbox dusty wich prevents good airflow.
3.: Is your xbox in a hot environement.

etc... anything that has to do with overheating , than check the gpu. Since its not easy to change.

I've checked everything.  Ripped everything apart and made sure everything was clean and connected.  Still Froze.  Guess I'll be looking for a new motherboard.  Sucks to me be.  B)
