Two 1.6a Motherboards Fragging.
« on: June 02, 2005, 01:22:00 PM »

About two Mounths ago I sold a xbox to a customer, the customer was very pleased with the mechine and it works 100%,but after about two weeks he returned it to me,becouse it was fragging,I thought that it most likely just the chip, that had a wrong bios flashed by the customer,I tryd replacing the chip and it still fragged,The customer was in a hurry and I just replaced it for him with another 1.6 board that I had laying around, once again he was happy,1 mounth later he brought it back again, same problem  and I was forced to swop it out again <_< .

I know that he hadnt opend them becouse the warentee seals(that I place on the mechines after modding) was all in tackt,he cleamed that it worked the previose day and started to frag the next way that he wanted to play.

Im now stuck with these two boards and I tried fixing them for a week now.

The mechine had the following:

1 A Aladding XT flashed with Evox M8
2 Latest Evox installed on the HDD (I Edited the INI and removed all things related to flashing and locking and unlocking the HDD)
3 XBMC Latest

I have tried the following:

1 Replace the chip
2 Checked the traces (checked the consistency with another working board)
3 Removed the chip and LPC rebuild

...And it still frags  :grr:

Now theres two things thats bugging me:
1 Can it be fixed
2 How on this earth did one customer blow two mechines?

I really want to get atleat one of these boards working again any help would be welcome!!

It might be something with power (as in he overloaded it) same customer probably means he used the same outlet and power cord to play them on, wouldn't surprise me if something was going on with the power in the system that gunked something up, but you'd have to be more specific on the type of frag, what point does it get to? does the hdd work? do you get video/audio? etc

Well its the "Normal Frag"

Theres no video or audio, the mechine turns on(Green Led),turns off, thurns on again(Green Led),turns off, thurns on again for the last time (green red)...

Both the Hdd and DVD spins up at each startup, but the console does the exact same if the CD and DVD is plugged in or not.

And Thank you for the help TheMuffinMan!!

I did tell the customer to use a different plug the first time, but maybe he didnt listen  <_<

its just an idea, but maybe the dumpass played around with the eeprom. i know, this would result is a red blink led, but its worth enough to give the boad a try with a bios and an embedded epprom. if you got a smartxx around try that, it should run withut an eeprom too.

When I had that problem, it was because of a bad bios.  I had a bad bios on my chip.  He may have been using a program he was inexperienced with and flashed the xbox bios.  If so all would be lost.  Even if you had a modded chip you would still have to have a working bios on the resident motherboard.  I have no Idea at the moment on how to flash the xbox bios if you can't get to it.

Sorry no help.

You can't flash the onboard bios on a 1.6, as the tsop chip is non-existant (or at least inacessable).

Hey Fasman :-) Didn't know you were on XS!

Look at D0 - check the traces around there. Post pics of the bottom side of the Mobo, if you can. Just an idea - sounds like D0 issue.

I'll put money on an over loaded power strip or outlet.  Voltage sags down enough to break regulation on the PSU, but not enough for it to turn off.

It could have been that networkBoy,but at the moment I just want to get these two boards working again...

Just noticed something wierd, the first box frages normally (starts 3 times then green/red flashing) The second frags 3 times, but only has green flashing not green red...
