Dirty Disc Errors Off Hard Drive (evox)
« on: May 25, 2005, 04:29:00 AM »

I had this exact problem too. I couldnt run halo 2 off the hdd as when i started the game i would hear the hdd searching and the game would show the load percentage going up before i got the error.

funnily enough i have a seagate 120gb too  huh.gif  but i dont think there was any issue with that. Im not sure howi got it working if at all (i later fried that board)

It sounds very much like premature failure of the HDD. Format it for the PC and send it back under warranty

This can still happen if the files needed are either missing or corrupt.

I had this with a game on the hdd - I just re-copied it over and all was fine.

Well this conversation cotinued via PM but i thought it could be of the benefit of others who may also have similar problems and we have still not got down to the problem so i think this discussion should continue here. Here the the rest of what has been said so far:

lol how did you go about shorting something?  I put the xbox in my car sometimes and run it off a power inverter so I'm worried that could be the culprit in all these errors.

So I've gone through the whole she-bang and have yet to find a solution.  Just now, I put a retail game in the DVD drive only to see the slugishness still present, and after I chose my characters, the game froze up with the infamous DDE error (dirty disc error).  So even off a DVD I still get this message.  Awfully wierd.  I don't know what to make of it.

Do you think the IDE cable becomes damaged over time use?  Why would I need to replace it if it was working this whole time and recently I get these DDE errors.  But then again, I see it as the next logical step since none of the games off my hard drive or DVD drive are working and both are supported off of the IDE.

Help me out.. haha.

so you don't remember how you fixed it?  This is driving me crazy because I just bought another seagate 200 GB and I really don't want to throw it in the box, rather use it on my PC.  Do you believe your seagate caused your motherboard to get fried?  I'm getting scared now and i dont know what to do.

oh no dont worry it wont cause your motherboard to get fried. Mine fried because of a completely seperate incident where i accidently shorted something. I really dont think there is anything wrong with your hdd. I cant remember exaclty how i fixed it but the first thing i would try is changing the ide cable (if you have any spare one from a pc to use) and see if that makes any difference.

To get the jist of it he has had the same problem i had where he gets dirty disk errors running games from the hard drive AND dvd. very odd  uhh.gif

Not really that odd ...

You see the DVD is on it's way out and is corrupting and misreading files.

So whether they are copied onto the hdd or playing direct, the same problem exists.  Games will still copy to the hdd but they might get corrupted by the DVD giving the same disk dirty error.

this is, again, what happened to me !!

Get a new DVD ...

It could also be the other way round. when you play a game from DVD it caches info into the HDD so if the hDD is failing the DVD can also be affected.
Can you not borrow a DVD drive from a friend just to try and at least you can see which it is.
If you are really unlucky it could of course be both

Isnt alot of the cached information held on the RAM not the hdd?

I personally dont think its the hdd failing. Right the MCPX chip (the one with nvidia on top) controls the ide devices so this overheating or failing would cause problems with the dvd drive and hard drive.
The other reason why i am lead to it being the nvidia chip is that when i had these problems i also had problems with my xbox occasionally freezing on the flubber screen or sometimes no output to tv when i turned it on which are problems sometimes associated with the failing MCPX chip.

how can this nvidia chip be replaced?  where can i buy the part and instructions to replace?

 i plan to take this to someone else who can fix this... but dont want to dish out the initial $30 to find out it was something minor that i could have fixed.

if anyone has experienced this problem, or knows anything regarding this matter, please join in on the discussion.

Motherboard= 122 F
HDD= 107.6 F
CPU = 142.3 F

Does this sound about right?

First some info:
XboX vers. 1.1
Xecuter 3

Okay heres the deal:

I have exact the same problem...

I bought the retail version of Area 51 but this one gave me the DDE`s. (and alot of other games are starting to freeze up/DDE`ing, both DVD and HDD)

So I tried backing Area 51 up the the HDD but then also the DDE continued...

I tried all things mentioned above:

clearing E:/cache,
clearing partions X, Y and Z
IGR is set to OFF

Ive deleted the savegames.

Also tried other HDD (have a Maxtor 160 gig) so I swapped it for my old xbox-stock HDD.

I tried other biosses (1959, 3108, 3293, 3294)

I tried booting up with modchip disable, (Standard XboX Dash).

I have switched of my modded lights (port-glows, side-glows, jewel lights).

All of the above dont help a bit, its so annoying cus I really love the game Area 51 and want to finish it...

Can someone pls help us.....

Any help would be much appreciated...

No new soft or hardware was added, and than all of a sudden i get these errors....

All my games (both on DVD and HDD) were working fine....

I've got the same problem. My xbox wasn't getting much use untill i got jade empire a week ago. I copied it over to the hdd played through the whole then when I was playing doa3 off the hdd it kept jamming I then tried a couple of other games and they gave me dde;ss before they even started halo 2 worked untill untill I tried to load a map. I haven't tried to use a retail game on it yet cause I left it a friends place.
