By the way.. everyone's talking about each square inch of each picture released, except the slot at the right end of the front of the console (rectangle with rounded ends)... I initially thought an hdd slot, but that's on the end... is it a cover for the three USB2 slots? Any ideas?

I just assumed it's a USB cover door.  Either that or some kind of expansion slot.  Leaning towards USB though.

Also... Does anyone else find the existing front light too bright when watching videos? I'm definately gonna disconnect the huge light on the new one if it doesn't autodim or anything.

Yes, that would light up my room that I try to keep as black as possible to get a better picture on the projector.   Side note: Had to put black-tape over the LED on the subwoofer or the entire room glimmed blue, it was that bright smile.gif

As far as the GPU memory bandwidth goes, the 256 GB/s is only between the GPU and the EDRAM which is only 10 MB. The interface to the main 512 MB RAM is only 22.4 GB/s.

Unless "10mbps" is their net connection... which is insanely fast.  I thought my 2mbps was fast!

QUOTE(TUUK @ May 10 2005, 06:58 AM)
If those specs are even close to true, M$ must be prepared to lose a fortune like last time. Look at a bottom of the range G5 and it's specs and compare it to this list. Compare the price of it against the projected price of 300 bucks. Very unlikely to get that kind of hardware for that kind of money.

Just my thoughts

I think MS might be in a better position this time, as they already have the xbox supplying revenue, and most importantly, xbox live is bringing in money as a service, not a product, so overhead is pretty minimal (relative to the income, that is). Having xbox live accounts continue over onto the xbox 360 is a way of 'locking in' the gold accounts (where the money is going to come from) immediately, so any money they lose on console expenses can be offset by xbox live subscription fees.

That's my take on the situation at least. With the xbox, they were jumping into a fray as a new contender, and had a lot of ground to overcome. Now, they've established themselves as a legit player, and they've got their foot in the door. It's a whole different ballgame now.

ironic how everyone on here is LED crazy yet when MS officially makes a huge bright light on the font on their console everybody shuns it. This has got to confuse the hell out of MS.  biggrin.gif

im not really into reading all these forums constantly and stuff, i really dont have the time sadly, so please dont flame me.

Ive read the 360 is going to have three G5 cores  - 3.0ghz - that would be x3 1.0ghz cores right?

Else where ive read three 3.0ghz cores.. 9ghz right? id love to think that was the case but wouldnt it be a real cooker aswell as a console?

someone please clean this up for me

I can't remember exactly where I read it, but I remember seeing it was rumoured that it would have three cores around 1ghz each...  One for AI, one for Physics, one for Networking.. or whatever tasks you throw at them, or even make them all work on a single task.  Sorry I can't throw in a link for ya, but I distinctly remember reading this somewhere.

3ghz processing power is amazing for a games console, so I think 9 is more than a little over the top, I'd feel bad for paying for hardware that'd spend most of its time picking lint out of it's belly button.

i would have to aggree "Each chip will most likely have a peltier cooler that transfers heat onto its own heatsink" its cheap and with the price it seems to be headed at being as cheap as it can be is what bill wants. Dont you think this time around he would want to make money instead of lose money???

I feel this is closer to the whole picture...
