I Want The Opinion Of Xlinkers!
« on: March 16, 2004, 06:53:00 PM »

I just got my 4th Xbox today and am looking for opinions on the new modchips.
I have always used Xecuter modchips in the past and like the fact they come with a switch where as the new generation chips seem to be menu driven. I also like the fact that I know if the chip is on or off just by looking at the light on the front.

I am inclined to stick with what has worked for me and get another Xecuter.

On the other hand, I also like to learn all the technology out there and Xecuter seems to have fallen behind in this category. So unless I hear otherwise I think I want to try a new chip.

I am looking for your experiences (good/bad) with the Xenium or SmartXX chips.

What I want to hear is:

"Go with Xenium/SmartXX, then a good reason for choosing this chip"

If you have a real valid negative opinion and have tried both chips. I would also like to hear the downsides to these chips.

Thanks and I hope this goes well. I am not making a pole because I don’t just want votes, I want explanations!

Note to Forum Mods: If you don’t want this in the XLink forum please delete. I understand this forum has nothing to do with modchips. I just hope to get a wider range of opinions than what you find in either of these chips official forums.

EDITED: I just read up on the latest specs of the X3 if I don't get and depth as to why I should go with a Xenium or SmartXX I think I will try to wait it out and get a X3!

I have no problem with this being here...

As to your question, well, as far as im concerned, they're all much of a muchness - just choose one which you think you will be able to install the easiest.

My personal choice is "anything which has a pin-header socket ... ie... just about everything.. lol..

I'll be ordering a SmartXX later tonight for a friend of mine. He currently has a X2 Lite, nothing wrong with that chip, but wants a bigger flash chip.
He wanted to wait for the new X3 at first, but since it seems it'll still take some time before that chip will be available he decided to go for another brand. SmartXX is by far the most feature rich chip at the moment, SmartOS looks really nice and it's developing fast at the moment. It's also cheaper then a XBIT chip (wich is a killer chip if you don't want the buildin OS).

So personal I would recommend you buy either the SmartXX, wich comes with a OS or a XBIT wich is a bit more straight forward but still has some nifty features like full USB support (haven't seen that on any other chip yet, I personally really like it) and a 2MB flashrom.  <

I was in the same boat as you always using Xecuter chips. So when I recently upgraded I went with Xenium and I didn't even look back. It is a great chip and very easy to use and install.

Good stuff thanks! Ill keep watching this post for a few more days and see if I get any other opinions.

(Of couse the method I have used the most would be the no modchip method of just flashing the TSOP. But for my own use I like having the modchip, especially since I use LIVE when I am not playing on XLink!!)  <

It's official,

I cancelled my live sub early this week. I did it in protest of ms's latest tactics. I played only 5 times on live, and was never really into it, but I figured I would support ms's great product, the xbox.

Well, no longer, in fact, I urge others to boycott.

True MS does some lame things.

My 12 Month account ends next month so I dont know that I will be renewing eather.

I did think it fair for MS to charge for live service, and since you HAVE to actually have the CD, to start causing legit people like me to not give them another $50 to renew becuase i have placed a larger HD in my Xbox, well it's thier loss not mine!

I do think MS should have allowed game developers to not require Live service to play online. Where the developer would have to run thier own server to support thier game. And could allow FREE play if they wish.

But as long as System-Link stays around............ XLink 4 Life!!!!!!!!  <

I used to have the original xecuter in my Xbox, but pulled it out in favor of flashing the tsop, and installing a switch for that.

I went with that, because the features of the mod chip at the times cost a hell of alot more than the simple $3 switch from radio shack, and actually took more effort to install in all cases other than pogo.

Obviously this doesn't offer up the menu driven boot ups, or any of the other chip specific stuff like LED displays, but it is a seriously cheap and very functional alternative to spending 10 times as much for a mod chip.

I have my modded bios set to boot up with a red LED, and goes straight to Ava on my G drive, while the original bios boots as it always has.

[EDIT]

Just read a bit further down and saw the post of your's stating your familiarity with the TSOP flashing. Just toss in a simple $3 switch and Live play is all good.

Also, for the record...

I have a 200gig in my Xbox, and play on Live regularly. I highly doubt MS will institute bannings for the different HD's.

They would in essence be telling all of us that have such, that they would prefer that we steal their games and play them on Xlink, rather than actually purchase the games as is required now.

As long as some dumbass doesn’t release a way to play on Live without paying. I agree that MS would rather allow people with larger hard drives to play on live then kick them off because they know that you actually OWN the game you are playing and have PAID for the service.  <
