The Answers Are Out There (and In Here)!

QUOTE
I am 95% sure most problems ARE user error so don't place the blame on the Devs when you can’t get XLink work! It is all well documented! Just look and don't go strait to posting questions! The XLink Dev's have better things to do than sit here and read a bunch of "HELP ME!" threads. They don’t get paid to, nor are they even getting paid to create the software they provide. If you wanted to pay for support, I don’t think they would turn you down. (I am not one of them so I am not sure but if someone wanted to pay me to help them I would most likely do it if I had the time. Try PMing them and ask for their paypal account and if you can pay for some help. Then shoot them $5-$10. or just do it to show your appreciation for their hard work.) But they don’t have time for every single user.

Here are a few things that will help you get your problem fixed.

Problem - Way too many people are posting “HELP ME XLink doesn’t work!” To that I have to say, “Do you really expect an answer? That’s not even a question!”

Solution - If you want a detailed answer, give detailed info on your problem.

Problem – There are many threads with useless info in them. No one cares what modchip you use, how big a hard drive you have in your Xbox, or how "You are a Networking and PC GOD" and you have your network set up correctly. Because if you are, why are you here asking for help!

Solution – Give only relevant and necessary info, if you don’t know what is or is not relevant, find a friend who can come over and create the post for you. Or you need to think about what you are asking and many times you will end up finding the solution on your own.

Problem – There is way too much arguing and unnecessary comments being made for those who people are trying to help. Throwing a fit and saying “I am going to just use XBC” isn’t the right way to find your self help either.

Solution - Don’t get offended if someone calls you a newbie, or points out errors in your setup. Everyone was a newbie at some point and it’s not something worth arguing about because no one wins, and no one will want to help someone who is being a jerk. If you follow the instructions on the website you should know if your setup will work or not. If you decide to just forget it and use XBC Good for you! At least we won’t have you in here picking fights or causing trouble, but that is a childish way to go, and what happens when you decide XBC doesn’t provide you with what XLink has to offer? Are you going to come back here and act like nothing happened? Are you planning on apologizing? Don’t burn your bridges, if someone isn’t a mod or someone special don’t discard them or treat them with any less respect. You never know who they know or who they could become.

Problem – People need to stop and read what Xtest is and how it should be used before rushing to the forums and flooding them with Xtest results! CLICK HERE if you don’t know what Xtest is or what it is for!

Solution - Xtest is to find out why you can’t log into XLink Messenger and little else. It doesn’t give much info other than way too many people out there don't read or don't believe that Wireless WILL cause 97% of the people who try it problems. (This doesnt mean wireless wont work. It just means you need to know more than the average user would to set it up corectly.)
Sub Solution – Don’t even attempt to use a wireless setup if you are unsure exactaly what needs to be done! Again CLICK HERE for more info.
ADD: - Look at MS's Xbox Live wireless statement. "Wireless LANs are not officially supported for Xbox." This doesn't mean it doesnt work!

Problem – People who don’t know a thing about networking or computers. (Nothing extremely wrong with that but it does present a problem when trying to ask for help)

1) Solution - Here are a few simple things to try if you can’t get XLink to connect if you are using a router.

a) If you have entered the port forwards correctly but XLink still says ports are not forwarded, or it logs in and then crashes and gives an error.
Unplug the router and plug it back in - sometimes it shows the correct forwards but its cache still contains the wrong information!

cool.gif If your router supports UPnP, use it!
Don’t bother manually entering the info especially if you are not 100% sure what you are doing!

c) DON’T USE WIRELESS period. If you do and it works, GREAT! Don't expect help if this is the setup you are trying to use!

d) WinPcap! - This does not support all network cards (inc. wireless cards.) I have had many problems trying to get any new Gb (1000Mb) card to work with it. Your best bet if it is a new card would be to try with the newest version of WinPcap. If you still can’t get it to work make sure you have the latest drivers for your network card. Don’t ask where because that is for you to figure out not the developers or any of the other users for that matter. If all else fails, Wait for the next version of XLink to come out. They have stated it will not require it.

e) If you have a Firewall/Router and are not using DMZ. There is no reason to use a software firewall at all. Windows XP comes with a built in firewall and you will want to make sure you have it disabled. I have seen a few people that are confused by what a software firewall is. Well let me state that it is NOT Norton Antivirus and disabling that to make XLink is stupidity on the users part. To avoid stupidity, research! Find out what you have and what it does. Don’t ask just go find! There is a Norton Internet Security Suite (which Norton AV may be part of) that includes a firewall. This firewall can be disabled without affecting the AV portion of Norton. Again don’t ask, go search and read to find out how.

2) Solution – Here will be a few things to try if you are using MS ICS

ICS/ICF Setup:
To configure Windows ICS/ICF

Click Start -> Settings -> Network Connections

Then locate your Network Adapter (Or Modem)

Right Click on your Network Adaptor (Or Modem) -> Properties

Then click on the Advanced Tab at the top

You will now be able to see if ICS and/or Firewall is turned on or not.

Check the ICS box to make sure it's checked
Click on Settings
Then click Add
Then type in XLink 1 for description
Then type your Computer Name (If you dont know what this is click Start -> Run and type in cmd then when you are at a dos prompt type "ipconfig /all" and the very 1st line states your Hostname)
Then put in Ext. Port: 34518 Int. Port: 34518 and click on UDP

Then repeat the process for 34519 (XLink 2) and again for 8602 (XBC) then again with 6073 (VoiceStream)

That should be all you need to get ICS up and running. If you have ICF turned on as long as you followed the steps above it shouldent cause any problems.

Misc. Problems and Solutions

Problem – What are you talking about I don’t have that option, you must be running RC2, Beta, 2.4.2, Kai, RC3, Omega, Kai 6, or Evo 7. Wait what is coming soon? It’s no wonder so many people get confused! I am not going to say it is the users fault here because it was the Devs who created the confusion and continue to go further and further away from a solution and creating an actual Release. Haven’t there been enough RC’s/Beta’s/Alpha’s/Omega’s/Kai’s  already!

(Possible) Solutions – Read this post

Problem – BO-Xlink, XBC-Link, how are they used and what are they?

Solution – READ!! http://www.xboxlink....link-about.php http://www.xboxlink....clink-about.php

NEW!!!
Problem - In Halo you get Can not Join System-Link game every time you try. Even if you are 100% sure you settings are correct

Solution - Have you changed your Xbox name? (The default names are so boring!) If you Xbox name has any characters other than A-Z and 1-0 it can cause you to not be able to join any games as well as make it so no one can join your game. Keep it safe by keeping it simple.

LOOK AT THIS I FOUND A FEW PAGES THAT COULD HELP YOU START YOU’RE TROUBLESHOOTING AND YOU DIDN’T EVEN HAVE TO ASK!
(When the new page is released these links may need changing)

HELP How do I……

FAQ Before you ask…..

(Somewhat outdated)  Got a problem? Want it fixed?

Most common routers and how to do port forwards with them. http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

You can always try asking for help on IRC if you want that more 1 on 1 instant answer stuff!
Just join the EFNet server of your choice and the join the all new #xlink room!

Guess where else you find help. THE PINNED TOPICS They are PINNED for a reason!

I hope this is helpful in every aspect, from answering questions, to asking questions.
Feel free to let me know (PM me) any errors I have posted and I will fix them. Don’t reply so everyone can see you saying there is something wrong with what I posted because when I edit it, you will look dumb for pointing out a problem that for everyone else that reads this post from that point on seems to be correct because I have edited it! That is what the Edit option is for!

I just wanna add for Halo, if you get DDE (Dirty Disk Error) when you try to join system link games, it's not always your disk. 95% of the time it's caused by a bug in Halo (yea, Halo isn't quite perfect tongue.gif ).

Easy solution, when you're at the "looking for games" screen, press Y (to create a game), B (to exit the game you made) then A (to join the game). The old YBA trick will prevent 'fake' DDE's. If that fails, then check your disk wink.gif

Hope that helps someone out there biggrin.gif
