XTest Inspection Tool
« Reply #46 on: November 01, 2003, 06:57:00 PM »

I keep getting the port forwarding error but all ports are properly forwarded using XP with all firewalls off.  I even tried in safe mode with no joy.  I have read everything I can get my hands on and can't come up with a solution.  Running version 2.2.4.  The odd thing is that I can run this on my machine with ME on it and all is good but not on my laptop with XP.  My ME machine is in a different room from my Xbox so I would like to be able to use the laptop instead.  I have a Linksys router BEFW11S4.

Here are my test results.  To me it looks like a firewall problem but I am sure they are all off.

Thanks for any help.

I posted the results of the test in another message, but got no responses. Please help if you can:

I'm having problems with my XBOX finding the system link games on HALO. I can see up to 7 remote XBOXs, but can't find any games. Sometimes I'll see 1 game and rarely 2, but never more than 2. Last night there were 8 remote servers, and the most I could find was 1 system link game. Sometimes it never finds one. Also, last night I was only seeing 1 side of a chat.

I ran the the test and have posted the results below:

I have to stress this to people... The point of the XTest is for people who can't log in, not for people who can't see a game in Halo or whatever...There's 1001 reasons why something like that wouldn't work. Some include: wrong wireless network setup, different region, not enough bandwidth etc etc...

Odinstorm - Don't use the wireless card on your laptop. You'll only be able to get XLink FULLY working if you get your XBox a WEB (Wireless Ethernet Bridge), or hardwire your laptop to the router. Plenty of people including myself have tried this. Search and you shall find...

MikeF - Looks like you shouldn't have any troubles logging in, although you haven't said so or not? The XTest appears fine.

SlipperyKING - The packets from the XServer aren't landing at your machine. Possibly a firewall? Check thoroughly and either disable any firewall you have running, or work out a way to let it bypass the ports XLink requires.

Warthog - You've got a fine XTest result, and I can tell because you're telling me you can log in successfully. What you're experiencing is more likely game compatibility / host issues. Try another game with another person and be more persistent. Halo does not = system link games. There are 29 others supported on XLink which have much less issues to deal with.

Dirkbox - Same thing as SlipperyKING.

AND COULD PEOPLE PLEASE POST MORE INFORMATION, NOT JUST 'HELP PLEASE'. NETWORK CONFIG, PORT-FORWARDS ETC ETC...

Right here goes.

I have Norton 2003 IS, this has been disabled, still don't work.  Then it has been set up to allow Xlink on all ports up and down on TCP & UDP.  So any other ideas?

I'm also running a Netgear router  which I have forwarded the ports that xlink requires.  It's a wireless router too so I have encryption set up on it, would this have anything to do with it?

PC & Xbox are both hardwired to the router.

I hold my ground. In a PROPERLY setup lan environment, 2 firewalls is not only pretty silly, but inefficient also. By "PROPERLY" I mean a clean environment. I am positive I have no viruses or trojans on my box because I have virus detection and a good knowledge of networking.

Wireless wouldnt normally be a problem. Should work fine, especially with xlinks' settings for wireless.

With a good working knowledge of networking, this work fine, but with 2 firewalls, it makes me thing that a newbie to networking (or one with little knowledge of what is on his machine) may have a problem getting it all to work as it should, hence why I said "its probably not helping".

I have Norton as the firewall in the router is not a true firewall.

As faf said still don't let me know if stuff is going out.

Wireless shouldn't have anything to do with it as both PC & xbox are hard wired.

I will try it with encryption off.

Thanks but your very wrong.

I know how to set up a network and have done a few.

A virus check don't stop people getting in.  As said before the router is not a true firewall.

Don't really apprciate being called a newbie when everything works on this system apart from your s/w.  Talking 2 wireless PC running many diffrent apps and services, hard wired FTP and oth PC too.

If you can't help just say that but don't call me a newbie because you can't understand the problem.

Also how do you explain that the thing don't work with norton turned off?  then it only one firewall.

Set yourself as the DMZ for a couple of minutes and try logging in. Hopefully it's just the encryption causing the issues...

The above is with norton firewall disabled, DMZ setup and router firewall disabled, encryption disabled.
Got a jpeg to show all is disabled, but can't upload it.

Everything is disabled and it's still not working?  Anything i need to setup in the Modem that connects to the router?

Also how do you explain that the thing don't work with norton turned off?  then it only one firewall.

k, lemme break it down for you then.

First, you scan for viruses on your pc. Then, you get your firewall going and connect to the net. See, this is what most people do because they are actually AWARE of what is going on with THEIR OWN machines. Nothing "gets through" because nothing is there to begin with (assuming the virus scan cleans anything that somehow you put on your own machine to begin with). I tend to think most people who are knowledgable keep their machines clean of virii.

Its not MY software either. I help Team Xlink out, by sifting through the silly problems and the serious problems.

You may not think you are a newbie, and you may not be, but your explanation of your network makes you out to be one in my opinion, and I am a network admin, knowing full well I have set up more networks than you have (or have lead me to believe).

Who knows what your deal is...I will try and help though when I get home.

I tell you what, rather than waste my time and yours heres a suggestion. Don't talk to me in a condescending manner!  I do know how to work my pc and networks, I also know what you mean about a clean system.  Virus is not the only way to gain acesss to a PC.  Proven by the countless security patches issued my MS for the OS's.

You still don't explain why the thing don't work with no firewalls, thus giving me agro about not having my system setup correctly holds no weight.

okay then, I wont continue to tell you that I dont think you know what you are doing, even though I dont think you do.

Here is a good example.

On the website it states to use UDP port forwarding, so tcp is not necessary. But, you know what you are doing, I forgot.

Also, (and this may actually help you) you should probably set your pc up with a static address (if you are not using static already), as dhcp may not work with the port forwarding.

Just accept that you are looking for help and dont understand some things, and I wont have to call you out.
