Uncapping Modem Yea Or Nay
« on: August 07, 2004, 01:31:00 AM »

ok so in some previous posts i read about uncapping your modem.  So i looked up on it and doesnt look too hard to do. I have 2000/256 connection not very good for hosting halo, all i really want is 512k upload. so you can modify your cap to basically up around 30mb up and down i think, but i just want another 256k up and ill be happy. read these articles and feel my pain. i want to do it but im scared $hitless.  Oh yea i live in Toledo, with buckeye cable, and have a motorola modem.

yeah like i said in a previous post, it is relatively safe. my friend uncaps his modem just to play on xbc. he's been uncapped for over a year now. playing with more than 4 people on xbc with hardly any lag is great. and that's from CT to SC with an 80 ping. :)

uncapping only works until the modem reaches a state where the modem has to grab a config file again. IE the cbl modem goes offline. (obviosly you can uncap it again but, can be rather trouble some at times)

HSI providers do recieve alarms/alerts for mis-matched config files and can act upon this how they see fit. Not to mention just how unethical this is. I mean you are basically stealing from your neighbors(people on the same node) who are paying for the service just like you are.  I mean how would you like to play some XBLive/XBC/XLINK or whatever online gaming you can use and you can't seem to get a decent connection because your neighbor was using all your bandwidth for porn. I would be pissed. It's your choice take the risk and possibly pay for it in the end....IMO it's not worth it, but to each their own.

All the MSO's are doing is covering their ass, by giving the customer a gauranteed service level agreement. If they didn't do that there would be a lot of complaints on service levels/speeds, on the nodes that have these "super seeders" (haha), and download hungry customers. It's all done for regulation and fairness.

Hmmm Let me give you a word..I was gonna do it a few months ago.  Until I read an article of an isp bringing in FBI and cops.  Here is the biggest part  the isp was my isp in my hometown of Toledo.  11 guys in my city were hauled off and they got prosecuted and I think more then a few served time and all payed fines of 5000+.  If you dont believe me goto dslreports.com and look for an article on ucapping modem.  My city is called sylvania, it's in toledo suburbs.  I'm sorry but it IS VERY OBVIOUS TO ISP'S these days and it definitely aint worth that risk.  Go read the article and think again.  Not very bright!!
