Controller Problem
« on: May 15, 2013, 10:07:00 AM »

I'll try to keep this short and to the point.

A friend sent me a few broken controllers. One in particular looked like it was in good shape. It was one of those gray and black ones with the "transforming" D-pad.

I hooked it up and all was well, except the right analog stick wouldn't pan left and right. I had an old controller that was perfectly functional, but the LED pads had been all burnt and lifted. I took the right analog module from that one, (after confirming that it was fully functional) and swapped it into the gray and black one.

I put it back together and played Minecraft for about a half-hour to 45 minutes with no issues whatsoever. Then all of the sudden, my character looks straight up into the air. I can still look right and left, but not down. As I hold down on the stick, it eventually pans down and works properly for another 5 minutes. Then it does this 2 more times and finally won't look down at all any more.

I had to go to sleep since I work early, so I had no time to open it back up and snap any pics to post or investigate. I'll take it apart later tonight when I get a chance, but I wanted to post here and see if anyone has run into this or might have an idea of what caused this. I'm guessing it might be bridged solder points. I have strong solder skills, but it was late and I hurried a bit so I could test it with time to take it apart if it didn't work, but since it worked properly for so long before messing up, I ran out of time!

Like I said, I'll investigate later, but hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction in the meantime. I'll post back with results if anyone is interested! Thanks
