E65 Error Toshiba/samsung Dvd Drive
« on: March 15, 2013, 04:47:00 AM »

E65: DVD Drive Error - Dvd drive is not DMA configured :Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This can also be caused by the tray not being fully closed on boot.

So... I would begin from the simplest fix... replace the rubber band that open and close the DVD tray.
If you still get the same error, means that it is something wrong with the firmware or the dvd board.
In that case, I recommend to read the DVD key from the drive and then inject it to a new drive, that will replace the old faulty one.

I hope I have helped.

Thanks for your replies.

There seems to be no signs of life with this dvd drive.

I found this xbox360 dvd drive pin.
IPB Image

I have tested each of the pins with my digital volt meter, and all the voltages look good.

I took the drive apart there does not seem to be any damage to the drive it's self.

I manually fully ejected the dvd drive tray, then connected just the xbox 360 drive power cable, powered up the xbox the drive did not try to open or close, I then gently tried pushing the drive tray close, but the drive did not self close.

So with the details you have given me above it would seem that the board is dead, or had a bad flash.

Looking over the board the flash rom chip looks to be SST ??SF020A (Might be 39SF020A), and if covered in some kind of semi translucent potting compound.

So where do I go from here?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards.

Having in mind the new facts, I recommend you to try to read the key direct from the board, but I am 99% sure that you will not be able to get any data from it. Even if it is not visible your dvd board has some burned components on it. If you have the necessary equipment and technical skills, you can unsolder the FW SMD chip, put it on a programmer adaptor and read the data direct from it. If that fails as well, then sorry... you are busted, you have a very good DVD player on hand.

P.S. Since the above procedure is kind of complicated and needs expertise, if you don't feel confident enough, find someone close by to do the work for you.

either hook it up to a via board and hit intro and power it on, or try to intro it using the samsung pmt intro outlined in the jungle flasher tutorial.  my money is your pcb is blank.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

When I have some more free time (when the kids go back to school after easter), I will then look more into testing this drive.

I have been granted access to a eeprom programmer via a friend if needed, to see if any data can be saved from the flash rom.

I will report back with my findings.

In the mean time I am working on repairing some other xbox 360 console, but I will leave that for another thread.

Thanks again.
