Xbox 360 Won't Read Game Discs

Other things that can be an issue in this situation

Dirty optic

Slowing Worm motor  - that worm motor has to snap the optic around very quickly during the starting checks.  Doesn't do it fast enough  .... failed read

Slowing Spindle motor -  games disc has to spin at the correct speed - or failed read.

Does this help some ?

Thanks guys, both helpful - Would love to try and replace some components but unfortunately just don't have the spare time so may well just get another drive.

Any ideas if it'll need to be the same manufacturer etc? And this is showing my age but....when I modded my original Xbox there was that whole thing about 'unlocking' your drive and the rest of the hardware needing to see the right 'key' before it would read from the DVD-ROM - is that still an issue and will I need to do that to any new drive I purchase??

If it's going to be too much hassle I could just give it to a repair person....!!

its this "insert disk in to a xbox 360" issue that makes me wonder..
it sounds like the dvd drive is not the right one for the xbox. or atleast the key is missing/not the right one..

Any way if it definatly is none of the above i would blame the laser or the ribon cable.
but i would check how easy the spindel spins and also if the worm motor spins easy too..

but like i said that instert the disk in to a xbox 360 would have me asking questions.

Now that I'm looking into swapping my drive over, I'm realising why shambles1980 might have thought it was a flash gone wrong :-D Seems that is what happens (discs reading as DVD movies) when flashes go bad!

So I have the Hitachi GDR-3120L drive - am I right in thinking all I need to do is buy a replacement Hitachi drive and swap the boards over, without any of this flashing business? Seems pretty straightforward if so....

Has the dashboard been updated recently?

If so, some of the latest dash releases flash the dvd drives firmware as well if they detect the FW is not original (i think that's why)... This is an absolute pain in the ass if the drive has been replaced at some point with a different drive and spoofed to appear the original, even if this is all stock FW and not intended to play copied games MS didn't give a flying f"ck and ruined many consoles with this clever little ploy.

As far as I know, no. We updated to the latest 'dashboard' about a year ago probably, but the consoles are kept offline so that we can keep them all running the same version etc. They haven't been online since....

That's a clever ploy of M$ tho!!

Yes I do, but as we don't own anything newer than Modern Warfare 2, and all the consoles have a copy, I highly doubt it's likely that one of them broke and the others didn't. Also this is a moot point as the drive FW hasn't been touched (nobody here at work would know how to do that).

Looks like it'll be a replacement drive from eBay for me! smile.gif
