Network Chip Dead 1023 Error.
« on: December 12, 2012, 12:11:00 AM »

So this was a BCM chip, yes ?

There could be a bad transistor or diode around there.  There's even a few electrolytic caps there.

The other thing is the Plug In Hub.  The one with Ethernet and USB.  There is a very small circuit board inside that terminal.  Only devoted to the ethernet port, I believe.  Its got some coils and a smd cap on it.

You could try replacing this Port Hub.  Those are my thoughts on this.

The other problem is getting that damn BCM chip grounded in the middle.  Its a bear.

Thanks,

I'm going to take some more measurements and see if I can find differences again.

I had pulled a network port off a board and checked in the back, but couldnt measure any differences between my JTAg and that one, so decided it must be the chip.

I may end up putting the larger network chip on (easier to confirm full contact + more available)  and making all the changes to resistors etc around it ...

This wouldnt be the southbridge would it? I just dont want to move onto that and risk killing a good board over a dud transistor...

OK took more measurements and found differences at R1B5, R1B4, R1B6, R1B7, I got the same as a board without a network chip on it by measuring continuity between those and legs on the chip, ...this = no contact on those legs.

In the end I removed the chip on there (to clean up and start again) but it left 2 legs on the board.... I lost the other chip i had and so put the original back on. = start screen for 2 seconds then 1 red light error 1030 .

I have just removed that origianal one again and put my last small network chip on, confirmed good contact and get 1 red lght error 1023.

Have removed and replaced it still 1023. Will double check contacts etc again later....  sleeping.gif

R1B7 was giving infinite ohms so swapped it for one off dead board = correct ohms but same error 1023.

Reflowed all chip leg contacts as some were still not giving continuity = boot.  biggrin.gif

This is a different network chip than original but still gives apipa 169 IP address!!  blink.gif

MAC address matches original nand btw as I checked that before removing network chip just in case the smc got messed up.

H'mmm, could be the port after all... do i stop right now or swap the port? LOL

Just tried a different router and it doesnt even light up the port light on the router, but on my switch (which xboxs normally connect thru) it does light up the port light and show activity. Same on my main router when connected directly to it, it doesnt even see it, so xbox just gets apipa 169 address instead. (yes known working cables etc etc)

It could well be the port....

I have changed the port.... still the same 169 apipa IP address only.

I doubt that the port I swapped over would be faulty as well so am ruling that out for now, so it must be something else, but for now I give up and use USB network adapter.   tongue.gif

I've tried doing that controller chip swap.

Swapping out the BCM for the ICS.  Even did the resistor work.

Couldn't get it to jive.  Has me stymied.

OK checked for differences on resistors / caps etc between this board and other xenon boards that used small network chip and cant find anything obvious going to and from the network port pins and the network chip itself...

Just in case of the obvious I rebuild the nand from scratch and flashed it again ... no change still Apipa 169 IP address.

So I give up. If anyone has seen this before then please chime in. (after reading the above posts thanks)

Summary:

This JTAG XBOX only gets Apipa 169 IP address. (all others are fine on this cable)

  Changed network chip

  Changed network port.

Correct MAC address from original nand, rebuilt and reflashed nand.

XBOX still only gets Apipa 169 IP address.

Xellous fails to find dhcp, rebuilt nand yet again and reflashed with Xellous Reloaded (pretty sure that was on there 1st tbh) ...same result cant find dhcp.

I have tried with another router (Linksys with DDWRT FW) with DHCP server running and using yet another cat 6 2m short cable which did light up the port lights on this router, but didnt see the device at all, so same apipa 169 IP address.

Static IP address doesnt work, ive tried it about 7 times, cloning mac address of a working device doesnt work either.

So this is an xbox issue of some sort.
