Possibly the wrong key is flashed to the drive?

Try swapping the SATA cable.

isnt it the laser??

have you tried to give it a pot tweak and check the resistance with a multi meeter?
could need a clean?
could need more power.
Could be sata cable as mentioned but id be more inclined to blame the laser.
open tray has always been a dead laser for me.
"play dvd"is usualy the error you get with a bad key.

edit

i tell a lie. i 1ce had open tray error, because some one had glued the spindel motor up so it could not spin at the correct rpm for the xbox to read the disk.
then when i replaced it and the laser i got "play dvd" because the guy had superglued it to give the open tray error, when the reall issue was a bad flash.
RGH was only just becoming available then so key extraction wasnt possible and so he messed it up just to make it possible to sell it.

but what im getting at is.. check the drive spindle motor is not messed up and freely spins by hand without feeling stiff. it could also just not be spinning fast enough for the xbox to read, but would help explain why a pc can read it.

He has another thread about this drive else where, he has it flashed with 0800fw and it rips games just fine.

That's what I'm saying - as far as I can tell the drive is perfectly fine. It rips games no problem with the 0800 firmware so the laser and motor and other mechanics have to be working properly. Simply put - when connected to pc everything is okey dokey. When connected to xbox everything is NOT okey dokey.

Tried flashing to stock. Tried flashing to LT3.0 and it just will not read discs while connected to the xbox. Reads everything fine while connected to PC.

Maybe the console now has too many flags built into it.  All the firmware changes you did.  Maybe too many security checks not passing fully.  It does sound like a potential internal security issue.

The drive I use with 0800 firmware - stays that way - is independent - and does not go back into a console.

The drive in the console is just LT+3.0

Just thinking maybe too much change has been done to it.

Take it's drive key and spoof a clean dvd drive to be place in your console for a replacement.

But flags may have to be removed from the console's log

Finally got it working! I put in another benq drive with stock firmware and dvd key and it still would not work. I then put in another benq drive with the LT3.0 firmware and it started working. So for some reason, even though there is nothing physically wrong  with the drive and even with the LT3.0 firmware, that sucker would not work in that xbox.

So  it took two things to fix - a new drive and a LT3.0 firmware flash. So maybe what you said is true about the system being flagged in some way and replacing both the drive and the firmware flash somehow cleared every thing up. What a pain that was.

Thanks for the help! smile.gif

i still think it could be a matter of the xbox is more fussy about what it will read compared to a pc.
a pc can use drives of diferent speeds, and varying accuracy. an xbox will crap out 1/2 way through loading a game with dirty/damaged disk error when the laser would be perfectly acceptable in a pc..

but aslong as it works now.

i havent ever heard of a flaged console not being able to play games from dvd though.
even fully banned consoles can still play from dvd.
