If you're not modding the LED's on the controller board there's no need to disconnect the face plate from the controller board, just unclip face plate then unscrew the controller board and unplug it from the motherboard. Job done. The reason why the eject don't work is because you didn't fully unclip the the ribbon from the controller board and pulled out the ribbon while the clip is still semi engaged thus scrapping off the black conductive paint from the ribbon, to repair it you need some "wire glue" (search ebay) stir the glue with a tooth pick until the wire glue dissipates into a dark black colour, scrape off excess glue from the tooth pick and paint (as thin as possible otherwise it won't plug back in to the connector) the damaged tracks back onto the ribbon, wait until it's dry and plug back into the controller board and it should bring the eject function back to normal.
You are so correct sir. savages and delicate electronics shouldn't cross paths. but we know how that turns out. Yes the conductive paint on the back will come off if you pull the ribbon before releasing the latch. I find a snap-on right angle pick usually helps when I have to disconnect the power switch ribbon from the rf board.
I personally use Caig's Circuit writer pen. It has good quality silver compound in it.
