E79 Every Boot :( Except......
« on: February 02, 2020, 04:45:00 PM »

First of all, I've never posted questions about a jtag in this particular part of the forums, so let me know if I'm in the wrong place (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Anywhooser, I've got a very frustrating problem: my zephyr jtag has recently been plagued by the common E79 error. First off, this jtag has been used heavily for the past few months since its been jtagged, with absolutely NO problems, including stuff like E79. I have always thought I struck lucky with the thing by not having any problems. Just recently though, while not paying attention, I accidently unplugged the power brick from the wall while a game was running  >.>

Not thinking much of it, I was getting off it anyway, I left it unplugged until yesterday morning. Then the thing became a nightmare. E79 no matter what I did. Even attempts to boot to Free60 resulted in a red light, with E79 on the screen or not. All of these boot attempts had been tried with AND without hard drive attached as well, still no go. Everything has been unplugged from it and the still same results occurred. However, after unplugging it for a minute or so, and trying to boot to Free60, it worked (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)  overjoyed, I hooked up the hard drive and tried to boot again - nothing. No error or red lights. Soooooo I took off the hard drive and it managed to boot to the dashboard.

At this point I though the hard drive might be the problem, but after more successful non hdd boots, I just put the hard drive on when it was already running annnnnnnd WHOOOO, it rebooted successfully with the hard drive. After that "solution" (if you want to call it that) though, it is still very frustrating when getting the error. Every E79 means running through the initial setup. And even when it does work, I need to attach the hard drive later.

So the question I want to ask before I go tearing through the thing desoldering the diode (that's my first guess as to what's wrong) is if there are any other possibilities as to what's going on. Like I said, it was a miracle box before the power mishap, no problems.

Thanks for any and all replies, and sorry again if this is a mis-post.

I would say a connection in your jtag has come loose.  Or maybe you have a joint that is too cold soldered.

Or your diodes are not the perfect correct ones

I would agree normally, but like I said, since day one of jtagging the box, it's been flawless. So I figured that would rule out cold/bad solder connections, just because those problems would have occurred earlier, rather than only after the power being cut. Is it at all possible that the diode could be damaged? Damaged but still work on occasion?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Well, like red ring, cold solder joints happen random. Especially if whoever solder did a quick, rush half assed job. E79 alot of times is bad wiring. Open the Xbox up, and resolder all the wires. And use new diodes just to be safe. If you like, you can take a pic of current soldering job. I have seen dry soldering before, where it works, and then just come off over time. So like i said, check the soldering first.

Okay, I'll give that a shot. I'm looking for new diodes now. Still a bit curious as to why bad soldering would cause this now though. There was one case when the second time I booted it up (still within the first day of it being finished), it gave me E79 and the sync button lights would go crazy. But after resoldering the diode, everything had been fine until the power mishap recently. I'll post pics once I've got it opened up.

Appreciate both replies

You should redo your JTAG with the transistor method instead of diodes, that is suggested to avoid getting e79, you just got to patch your image different for transistor method.  Needs AUD clamp patch when creating nand image.

Also your XBOX could of just decided to die on you.
