Capacitor Question
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:12:00 PM »

hello I've been working on xboxs for a lil while now and last night I got a 360 and one of the smt capacitors under the cpu is broken off well as soon as the 360 powers up it overheats and shuts down so I'm guessing this is the problem what I wanna know is can I take a cap off another board and replace it that should fix the issues correct

ok cool thanks I know how to do it I opened it up and took the stock thermal paste off and it was rock hard that's not normal is it I've fixed about 10 360s by swapping the xclamps out for bolts after a reflow this still has clamps so ill prob swap them out next and see what happens but now I've got a new question will anything bad happen if I don't change the cap right away or no cuz I ran outta my desoldering braid and would rather wait till my new one comes in the mail

No worries, the max can happen is to get strange errors, something like 0003 or 0020 because of the missing caps.

Ok awesome thanks I've got new thermal paste and bolts on it now but its still overheating within like 2 seconds I've done about 10 xboxs like this so far so I know I did it all right but I think the heatsink mmight be a little high off so I'm going to mess with it and see if I can get it to work cuz if its just shutting down that's a heatsink problem correct nothing else and I've also got a 12v fan mod cable made and I'm going to install that in next to see of it helps any
