Replace Dvd Drive With Key Reading And Inserting
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:43:00 AM »

Hello All

Ik have a xbox that has trouble with reading games.
In want to change this xbox with a new drive, but for this is will need to read te key from the original drive.
And put it in the new dvd drive.

But, i want to do this without getting banned from xboxlive.

I've been searching for a good guide to replace a dvd drive.
But 90% of the guides doesn't include replacing the dvd key.

What is the best way to replace a xbox drive?
And is there a good (and fairly simple) guide for this?
I have no crossfire cables to put a drive in mode B for example.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Martijn

You can simply buy the SAME exact model and just swap the internal drive motherboard and put it in the new one without doing any key swapping.  Benq and liteon require simple soldering.

Thanks for your reply.

And if the drives are not exactly the same, the only option is to read/write the key?
Do you have a good guide for swapping the boards, and a guide for reading/writing the key, when the drives are not the same?

And what is the change of XboxLive ban when i will use the read/write option.

You want to keep them the same, you will have problems in the future if you dont.  Since May 2011 dash update, you can no longer spoof drives and get away with it.  You will get update errors.  Also if you have a drive that does AP25 protection and replace it with one that doesn't, then you wont be able to play some games.

Hmm okey.

Is lazer + motor swapping also an option?
And do you need exactly the same lazer and motor to swap, or can this be a tad different?

For example put a Hitachi 59 lazer in a 79 drive.

only the laser needs replaced the motor is fine, the drive wont spin the motor if it cant see a disc in it.

you need to replace the laser with the same model laser, i think the 59/70 have different lasers

crack the bitch open check laser model and order it on ebay thousand available really cheap.

very simple job to change laser over, much easier than switching PCB or trying to flash drives.

Hmm okey.
Got the xbox today.
Found out that it had a Samsung TS-H943 drive.
It can only read games 40% of the time.
And the drive sound very unstable.
When it starts spinning, you here a lot of scratches etc. coming from the drive.

My idea is now to completely swap the drive with a new one, with the pcb swap trick.
But what i want to know.

Can i only swap this pcb into an other TS-H943 drive.
Or can i put this pcb in a Benq drive for example?

What drive should i buy to swap ?

Edit:
By the way.
The xbox is an old V1.0 Xenon xbox.

again replacing the entire drive is overkill and unneccesary

the grinding noise is the laser trying its best to focus and failing miserably

just replace the laser much much cheaper and simple to do

trust me ive fixed hundreds over the years and never had to replace a whole drive yet.

The laser that you need for an SAMSUNG XBOX 360 drive should be the HD67 , the HOP-141X is for BENQ. DX doesn't have it, so you must look somewhere else. I have in stock btw if you need one.
Here you will find instructions how to replace the laser in samsung:
http://www.llamma.co...disassembly.htm

The open tray (stuck tray) issue, is caused by the rubber band that moves the tray. Replace it with equal size , new one and will be fine. Alternative is to put the old rubber band in hot water to restore its shape, but I have noticed that, this reduce its life.

Thanks for your reply. smile.gif
I live in The Netherlands, so i think it will be quiet expensive to ship the laser.
But may i ask what your price is for the laser, including shipping?

And when i try to open the drive, i hear thunk, like the drive get stuck somewhere.
This is also fixed by replacing the rubber band?

Edit:
Found a youtube video with exact the same problem.

I will give it to you €7.00 including shipping. It cost me much more but that was 1 year ago. Is brand new and has a solder point for security (it holds the laser in place during transportation). You need to remove that solder to enable the laser (I will pinpoint it with a marker for you on the laser).

The problem you show on youtube, will be solved by replacing the rubber band, indeed.

That would be great.
Can je PM me your billing info etc. ?

And i will look for a replacement rubberband later today, and report back if the drive is working correctly again.

Thanks for the help so far  happy.gif

Hmm, since i can't edit my previous post, i'll have to make a new one.

I have fixed the tray opening and closing error with the rubber band.
Thanks for the tip MadMaxGR smile.gif.

And for the laser, it works again.
Did the pot tweak, and lowered the resistance to 3.8Kohm.
But i still want to swap the laser, because the pot tweak is only temp, and i still have terrible grinding noise.
Especially when the disk spins down.

I am glad the tray issue is solved and the pot tweak gave some more life to your drive. I sent you PM with details, if you are still interested for the laser.
