QUOTE(dlarge @ Jan 19 2012, 08:30 PM) View Post
I have a benq drive that was having problems reading disks - the laser didnt sound too good and it wouldnt read many disks and the ones it would take quite a while to fire up so I have purchased a new one - removed the anti static blob but it wont read any disks at all.  The disk spins for around a second then the XBOX just says "Open Tray".  I put the old laser back and thats doing the same now.  The movement seems ok on the laser as far as I can see when the top is off the drive.  It moves along at least.  I dont have a multi-meter so cant test the Pot but i would guess it would be set to to roughly where it should be. If I messed up the removal of the Anti-Static Blob would that stop it Reading Disks at all?  That said it doesnt explain why the old one is now playing up.

Any Ideas?  Would be most Grateful

Thanks

Dave

Have you flashed the new drive with the old key?

Ive not swapped the drive - just installed a new laser.  It wont read DVD's either - not tried a CD but I suspect that will be the same

Might have been the Spindle Motor all along - that would be my guess.

See - the disc has to spin fast enough to be properly read.  Those motors do alot of work for a tiny part.  They eventually give out.

You need to watch the dvd drive operate with the cover off.  That will tell you where the problem lies.  Just make sure to have the top half of the spindle on top of the disc - or you will scratch the game.  The top half is the plastic piece with the magnet in it.  You'll have to remove it from the top cover lid

And if you are going to play with the laser POT - you should buy a cheap multimeter at least

I did watch it with the cover off - i dont how to get that thing out of the top cover though!  I used a very old game that was scratched and tried to hold a little pressure on the disk to hold it down.  It seems to spin very fast and then stops - but im assuming thats because its not reading it properly rather than the motor. How do you get plastic piece out with the magnet?

To get the spindle top out -  the cover with the Benq label.  Feel for a circle under the label.  Then take an exacto knife and cut around the circle

Things should lift out from there.

Trying to hold the disc in place with you fingers is enough resistance that the motor will slow down.  Don't suggest doing that anymore.  Use the plastic magnet spindle  - friction free spinning that way

Managed to get the magnet out.  The disk spins quickly for about a second the laser lights up but then just stops.  I notice that the laser goes right to the middle of the disk and makes a clicking noise if hitting the spindle noise.  I have moved the laser far back, and it moves cleanly up to the middle when it needs to so dont think thats the issue.  I guess I should try the Pot Calibration.  Just need to get hold of a multimeter now.  Alternatively just buy a new drive off....
