Hitachi Lg Gdr3120l Dvd Not Reading Disks Question?
« on: January 18, 2012, 09:52:00 AM »

last night i wanted to play on my 360, i inserted my game disk it gave me a "this disk is dirty" so i was ok let me clean the disk inserted it again and nothing i tried other games with no results same thing or i got the infamous "please put in an xbox 360 disk" leading me to think my laser from my drive that is 5 years and a half old has a laser gone bad...

can i just buy the hitachi-lg laser off ebay "install it" "Pot tweak it" and "Voila" or do i have to do other steps?

Note: i am using the 12v mod on fan taking power from the dvd drive cable which im about to take that out and get me my self a talismoon whisper legacy next month because i heard that using that as a power source kills the laser or am i wrong?

Hey

In my opinion, YES - that 12 volt fan mod is affecting your DVD drive.  Remove it.  I never liked that mod.  There are better sources of 12 volts on the Mobo - that won't effect performance

There are 4 voltage lines in the DVD power cable.  Two are 12 volt, one is 5v and the another 3.3.  Important there is not a drain on them.  So patch your cable or buy a new one that is intact.  Should be cheap.

Before you buy another Laser assembly.  Remove the mod - then POT tweak the laser you currently have.  Turn the DVD pot clockwise not even an 1/8 of a turn.  If you have multimeter, take a resistance reading before adjusting.  Then lessen the resistance 100 ohms at a time - the less than 1/8 turn

Other thing it could be.  The dvd spin motor isn't turning fast enough.  Could be the mod - Could be the motor is dying.  You'll have to open your DVD player - plug it back into the 360 and watch it run.  Remember the top half of the spindle - Very important to have on top of the disc before it starts to spin.

Let me know what you find  - Or if you have trouble with anything

so i opened the drive up today and tried to see if the dvd drive spins the game disk it does!!!
took the mod out and checked if that would fix the problem and nothing the funny thing is now my laser is burnt it doesn't even fire up and doesn't spin the disk it only moves u or down like it wants to read the disk. so i think it was time for the laser to die out. i didn't even tried the pot teak. so now i have a replacement lens coming to me in the following days. and this is no jtag or gliched boxed i only did the xclamp fix a couple of months ago because gpu was failing me.

Wow

That was a little hard to follow.  You might have been typing too fast.

Your sentences ran on.  Sorry - not trying to be jerk.

Tweaking a POT - might have turned the laser back on.  Turning the pot one way lessen the resistance - thereby increasing the power

If you have more problems with the 360 you just - un x-clamped.  Then you might have to reball the GPU - Just a heads up

at what kohms is safe to put the laser at?
i heard in different forums that usually 2.8 - 3.5 ohms is good
what is the safe range and what is the limit barrier?
mine was set up at 2.4 from factory

You could try right at the edge of 2.0 Kohms

And for experimentation you could try lower see what happens

But 2.0 Kohms might be the limit

after further inspection of my ribbon cables, it looks like the ribbon cable that connects the board to the laser lens has a micro crack. In the last line in the ribbon cable, it had a little bend in it with a micro gap not completing the circuit  sad.gif  another few days without xbox 360 pisses me off.... maybe that is why i was having issues with my laser
