the underpowered PSU may not have enough juice to power the console, and it will just chime and turn off

if it was the other way around, and the PSU had a higher output than the console required, it would only supply the required amps, not melt the console. The PSU can adjust the output as required by the console.

same with the older phat consoles, the PSU supplied with a Xenon puts out 200W approx but the latest fat model jasper only needs like 125W, but the 200W PSU plugs in and powers the console fine.

The psu from a jasper does not fit a xenon console and would not be able to power it.
