It is now 3am, but I have my box back to stock again  

For future reference of anyone else who may have the same problem.  If you are using the PIC18F2455 based NAND flasher, and you have a large block NAND, do not use the firmware linked at the start of the xboxhacker thread about the device.  You must use this one or your writes will not work.  Fortunately the read was fine, it was just the write that was failing so I haven't lost anything except an entire day
