Screws Attached To Cage Or Mo'bo?
« on: November 09, 2011, 08:02:00 PM »

Hey all, just had a quick Q for all u 360 guru's out there. I've been doing a bunch of repairs lately, probably about 60 or so in the past 2 months and through my research prior I found a guide on Xbox-experts recommending that the screws used in the X-clamp replacement mod should be screwed in through the cage from the underside and attached to the mo'bo that way. Now I've seen a handful of refurb's come in that have the screws attached to the motherboard itself, rather that to the metal chassis/"cage". My question is this, which method is better? Which will cause less warping?

Any insight is appreciated!  :-)

All depends the screws you use. I personally use the screws on the board and the board fits just right in the case and don't push the board upwards when is fitted in the metal case.

just the xclamp doesnt do much. but if you reflow or reball its better to use bolts...

I always reflow the boards before reassembly. The purpose of replacing the X-clamps with bolts is to keep pressure on the chips, allowing better heat dissipation into the heatsinks and to prevent warping which is what causes cold solder joints in the first place. That and inferior solder used in the manufacturing process.

So will there be less warping if the screws are attached directly to the cage? I assume the cage would offer support and reduce flexing when the board heats and tries to expand so that would be my conclusion but I wanted to get more opinions than just my own.

Thanks for the input   biggrin.gif
