Think I Shorted My Xbox
« on: August 29, 2011, 01:47:00 PM »

I am confused you used only 1 washer on top and 1 washer on the bottom?

Did you reapply thermal grease, how much did you use?

I used some grease from a pack that my gf picked up at the local computer store
that was purchased for like $3.99.

Yes one washer on the top and one on the bottom. I did not screw the screws into the bottom of the case. just on the board. I have arctic silver 5 and used a small amount. like a drop the size of a rice grain. madden comes out tonight and i won't be able to play now darn

Ok so in total you only used 8 washers on the bottom and 8 washers on the top? blink.gif

you need to have 4 washers on each of your screws before you place the 360s mainboard
down on the them then 3 on each screw on the gpu side and 2 on each screw on the cpu side.

so that is a total of 52 washers in all. then all you have to do is just make sure the screws are
snug, don't tighten them down till you can not turn them. Just make sure that your heat sinks
are stable in there position.

well wouldn't the xbox still turn on. i think the people at store give me the wrong washers maybe, and it shorted it out

i bought one that someone did that too. it was shorting out. kept 2 ringing. and i went and bought a crap load of washers and bolts and redid it. put 3 metal+one nylon on bottom, 1 nylon on top. works perfect now.

try to find some nylons. if you are in the us, home depot and lowes sells them

I will have to head to home depot. hopefully they will have them, maybe i should order them online. so there is a chance my xbox is still alive

That could be the case of the wrong washers but if you are putting too much pressure on the
mainboard of the 360. It did turn on for a split second but you didn't have the heat sinks perfectly
rested on the die of the processing chips.

So if you only have 16 washers in your system for an xclamp fix, you need more washers.
Also the washer size you need is about as round on the outside and inside of the copper
colored spaces that are around the cpu/gpu, and about the thickness of a dime.

Also, don't be to disappointed because if you tighted your screws down too far you may have
already killed your console. Do you have any friends who have attempted this near you who
had luck at repairing this? I would take it to them and see if they can help you with it. If your
in the Cincinnati area of Ohio I might be able to help you out.

I saw some youtube videos that said if you don't put the 3 black screws on that wireless thing in the front that turns on your xbox, it would not turn on with out them.

Don't believe everything you see on youtube. I have run several boards with no case, just on the work bench. Ground like that doesn't have a reliable enough connection

i overtightened the bolts once, and killed mine, now it is just sh*t. all you want is about hand tight.

even with it shorting out it should come on, or the psu light should turn red?

when i overtightened mine, the u5b2 mosfet gets hot on standby. see if there is broken traces, caps, mosfets, etc.

and dont believe everything on youtube, the penny trick, towel trick, etc.

It still doesn't seem dead to me, though. I only say this because I thought mine was dead until I added
another fan to cool it down. You could try and sell it but your probably not going to get more than $20.

You might as well just give it to some one for that.

it looks like it was that power supply. I think that gave me the 2 red rings in the first place. i would turn my xbox on and the 2 red rings would light up immediately. So it was amber when i thought i twas shorted and the light went to yellow, i decided let me turn it on with no heatsink. turned on but again 2 red rings immediately. so it has to be the brick. So i am thinking i opened my xbox for no reason lol. well i am going to get nylon washers. So 2 for each screw right?

By the way i was frustrated, that i went ahead and bought a new xbox with kinnect 4gb bundle at toys r us online.  I got in the deal where i get gears of wars epic edition for free. a 150 value. So they messed up on the order gave me 10 percent off on top of that and free shipping bringing the xbox down to 269.99. So now my options are to sell it when it arrives and sell that game. I can also just get the 4gb 199 model and the sell this xbox if i fix it.

well thanks guys
