Hi, I bought a used system with 0031 code, It seems that this code is related to RAM and Southbridge.
http://xbox-experts.com/errorcode/E13/0031/

It obviously has been opened before with heat gun fix applied but X-clamp was not touched, thermal compound was original.

I cleaned thermal compound and redid the heat gun fix, still has 0031 code even without using a heat-sink, so it was NOT a short caused by heat-sink.

I had read that it is also possible having  a defect capacitor or mosfet. but I don't know howto test.

There isn't too much information about this code when google it.
any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

As we all know most problems with XBOX 360 is related to the GPU. But if you have to check MOSFETs then you must unsolder them to test them with a multimeter.

Anyway the link you provide is 9 to 10 times accurate for 0031 error:

1) Reflow the RAM and Southbridge
2) Loosen your heatsink screws and make sure the heatsink isnt shorting out a capacitor...
3) Replace the faulty RAM brick
4) X-Clamp replacement
5) Replace dvd power cord. Short in the dvd drive cord or the cord is in backwards.
6) un-bridged U6T1 or U6T2 (point that protect cpu-fuse)

If you did all these and nothing happened, then start checking MOSFETs as thw following link says:

life lesson, don't buy broken shit.  there is usually a reason it's sold broken, the owner already knows it can't be fixed.

All it means is the owner can't fix it! I bought a cheap PS3 online that was sold as having no video or audio then turning itself off after a short while.

The fix was as simple as updating the FW because it had failed during a previous attempt. What the owner thought was a paperweight was actually a perfectly working console which was up and running in less than 10 minutes!

i bought a fat elite with the 031 error, after taking a good look at it i found a fleck of solder on the legs of the nand. once id removed the fleck of solder it worked fine.  can also be caused by the power cable being plugged into the dvd drive upside down if i remember rightly.

Now I have measured that U5B1 (3.3V) and U5B2 (1.8V) is OK.
Next step, should I focusing on faulty RAM or SB

Too many RAMs, how to find out which one is bad?

Thanks!

One expert told me it has 90% chance of faulty RAM.

howto test a RAM?
