Looking good.

Too bad by the time it comes out and reaches an affordable price, the 360's successor will already be announced.

You mean right after they said that the 360 is "about halfway through it's lifetime"?

The 360's successor isn't coming out until 2013, likely in the fall. sooooo...you comment is mute.

BTW, I'm happy their is a progress update...but I thought they would be further along, it was supposed to be available mid to late June, and its currently slated for early to mid July.   But by the look of it, it wont be in my hands until August.   sad.gif

I know its standard to keep details under your hat until you are sure that nobody is copying, but why the hell haven't they commented on LIVE support yet? And by comment I mean completely clear up the confusion. I honestly think it would be best for companies to NOT announce a product until they are brave enough to release details. Also, have they commented on XGD3 support at all?

Also, why do they have to make this system complicated. Why can't someone just make a device that will emulate just enough of the disk so your 360 will play the game already installed on your HDD? That's pretty much the only thing I really want. That or maybe a universal disk that lets the 360 boot all games from the harddrive. That last one is not possible for the most part so probably not, sure would be nice though.

Seriously though, why reinvent the wheel when the 360 can already install all proper-region retail games, regardless of wave of disk format. I don't really understand why they wouldn't just do it the easy way and just make it emulate whatever the 360 looks for when it is verifying the correct disk for playing games installed on your HDD. This method also makes piracy a little bit harder for 360's with only this device (i.e. no modded fw). Sure they can install rented games or friends games with no problem, but at least there was SOME money in that transaction. Anyway, it just sounds overly complicated for its intended purpose. I'm sure there is probably a reason I am missing that will make sense of the path they chose.

I hate to be "that guy" (not really) but I think you meant a moot point, not mute.

Not forgetting of course that it was your comment, not you comment smile.gif

It may be that there's not much difference in the work involved to do either job.  Besides, in the grand cat-and-mouse game of things, the next step for the cat would be to perform the disc-in-drive check on any one of a whole bunch of random sectors, the only way to reliably catch all those events (which could be blatantly used for gameplay authorisation, covertly used for Live banning, or one followed by the other) would be to capture the whole DVD.

Looks good so far, I bet MS LegalTeam 2011 is ready for release shortly afterwards, though...

Ship it with a blank firmware or better yet include a disc with a firmware that blinks a stupid LED.

Now you have a product that MS can't go after.

You'll be in the same boat in the fact that you'll need to acquire the proper firmwares to make it do anything useful.

already pre-ordered mine.  perhaps some don't understand, but i think the way the xkey works is that you don't have to have any original discs in the drive for the games to run.

i don't care about live support anyway.  crazy to think you should go on live with backups anyway.

Damned right! And there's no apostrophe in Nazis smile.gif

In other news, there's an updated post on the front page.  It's very interesting to see the timing graph, looks like the xKey can match your own drive for timing, so that's one less way for MS to detect what you're up to biggrin.gif

This really looks like a game-changer, both in function and in the grand scheme of things. Looking forward to its release!
