Okay so MS can flash this drive with a dash update from disc or live yet this write lock has us buying new chips pcb's and drives? Someody needs to disect the code from this dashflash, the password to unlock has got to be in there + if they can flash this way so can we. Potentially a disc could be created to flash to Lt 1.9 2.0 whatever somebody with skill just needs to step up.
i think you are misunderstanding what the most recent dashboard update did.
1. the most recent dashboard update did NOT flash any 0225 drives
2. the most recent dashboard update did NOT enable write protect on the 9504 drives
if it is possible to manipulate the write protect through software, ms certainly hasn't given us a working example to dissect.
hacking takes time to develop a solution, and swapping a pcb/chip does not. will a software method be found in the future to disable the write protect through the use of a special command? who knows. but regardless, it won't be found anywhere near as quickly as these can be brought to market. i would take a (imo overpriced on the full pcb side, reasonably priced on the chip side) replacement solution over no solution any day.

so... is it going to be save to play xbl on these 'new solution' ??
why wouldn't it be? its the same chip, the only difference is that it is coming with the write protect disabled and you have the option to enable it whenever you want. the hardware is no different, so it should be no more or less safe than any other drive using the ix 1.9/2.0 firmware.
