To get the boards they will be buying up the drives, replacing the chip themselves and throwing away the drive mechanism, so it seems like a reasonable price considering the labor involved.

I was thinking they were manufacturing the boards themselves, or possibly ordering the boards in bulk (but without the drives).

As for replacing the chip yourself, it shouldn't be terribly difficult - just use a heat gun (carefully) or smd station (if you have one) to remove the old chip; soldering the new chip on is easy with flux and a strip of solder across all legs. All you need to do is spread the solder back and forth across all legs (which you can also use this method to remove the old chip), then with some desoldering braid you can clean up the exess and voila!

Okay so MS can flash this drive with a dash update from disc or live yet this write lock has us buying new chips pcb's and drives? Someody needs to disect the code from this dashflash, the password to unlock has got to be in there + if they can flash this way so can we. Potentially a disc could be created to flash to Lt 1.9 2.0 whatever somebody with skill just needs to step up. I realy don't see C4 doing this do to legal reasons. From what I understand he is cahootz with executer and letting a disc like this loose would be like kicking them outta bed. So we'll see... it is only common sense that reverse engeneering this update could revolutionize the scene. Not bad mouthing Commodore by no means he is the man. Let me know if I'm off track here

Dissecting any MS code is difficult since everything is signed and encrypted

Ya but the full board replacement PCB will allow anyone to upgrade their locked 0225 / 0401 drive to an unlocked solution with the external write protect off and on feature.

If you have alot of skill you can get the cheaper solution and modify your existing locked 0225 / 0401 drive with the new fix.  but you need some skill.

For us we started gathering professional installers from across Canada, USA and UK (soon australia) that can do this properly for those that wish to get the cheaper fix and have a professional installer upgrade their drive.

Atleast there is a fix from TX; that is the most important thing.

I'm not againt the xecutor dudes, the pcb probably worth it... But...

it's matter of time before china start selling DG-16D4S 9504 pcb, instead the whole drive.

The only sell point of the xecuter pcb is the write protect thing. And only in case Microsoft will care.

I'm sure there is already figured out how to write protect a 9504 via a small hardware mod.

i don't know about this.
they're trying to sell a pcb for 75$,but you can find on dealextreme a fully functional 9504 dvd drive for 60$ (that's pcb+laser+ribbon cables+worm drive+spin motor+metal casing and all the other components).by that logic, the chinese will be able to sell similar modified pcb's (with the added WP on/off switch) for 20 or 30$,the same price of the QFP chip sold by xecuter.
if they will do this, nobody will buy a 20$ QFP that takes some work to install, when you could buy a whole PCB for the same price, and install it much easier.

i'm kinda skeptical about this, and i don't want to invest in some serious equipment that would make transplanting IC's easier, just to see one month later 20$ pcb's on ebay,or even worse,a soft unlock method for the 0225 or 0401.

well nice move TX

the original chip is 1339E which is write protected and shares the smae pinouts and functions with 1335WE (write enabled) so just replacing the mt1339E with mt1335WE will make the work go good.

well played, its kinda wtf solution hahaahah;

But if the chip cost 20 and the labor + Shipping will cost as much or more then the pcb board.

i think you are misunderstanding what the most recent dashboard update did.

1. the most recent dashboard update did NOT flash any 0225 drives
2. the most recent dashboard update did NOT enable write protect on the 9504 drives

if it is possible to manipulate the write protect through software, ms certainly hasn't given us a working example to dissect.

hacking takes time to develop a solution, and swapping a pcb/chip does not. will a software method be found in the future to disable the write  protect through the use of a special command? who knows. but regardless, it won't be found anywhere near as quickly as these can be brought to market. i would take a (imo overpriced on the full pcb side, reasonably priced on the chip side) replacement solution over no solution any day.

why wouldn't it be? its the same chip, the only difference is that it is coming with the write protect disabled and you have the option to enable it whenever you want. the hardware is no different, so it should be no more or less safe than any other drive using the ix 1.9/2.0 firmware.
