I've had my 360 since December of 2008. It RROD'ed on me once in 2009 and I had it sent in and repaired. Since then, I've been having problems. Some games just do not work at all, and I get a disc unreadable every time (Halo: Reach is becoming worse and worse). Some games work perfectly, barely ever freezing. When I have no disc in, I've noticed that it is freezing more and more also.

I have a new laser on its way, should be here by Friday. But I'm starting to wonder if the laser isn't the problem. Or maybe it's a combination of different problems. Any ideas as to what might be going on?

there are only two reasons for your issue.... Laser or GPU... since you ordered the laser already, try it and let us know.

Ok, so I replaced the laser after removing the solder ball (there's still a little bit of solder on it, but the "bridge" is visible now so I figured it's ok). I noticed that it's a bit hard to move the laser back and forth, like the black part that connects to the bronze screw isn't on correctly. When I turn the 360 on, the disc doesn't spin, and the laser turns on for a brief second but doesn't move. It then says "Open Tray."

Any ideas on what I did wrong? Could I have damaged the bridge when removing the solder ball or is it likely more related to how I put it back together?

The disc spins now. And I messed up while putting the laser back in, I didn't push the white part down below the screw. But now, the laser can't seem to read the disc, so it will sit there, reading near the inside of the disc for a few seconds, then it says "Open Tray".

When I try opening the tray, it doesn't work. Not sure if those are two separate issues, though.

edit: I also checked the DVD pot and it's at 3.88k resistance.

Ok so I'm pretty sure I did some damage when removing the anti-static point on the new laser. But if I did, would the laser still turn on and try to work? Because it still turns on.

edit: I also seem to have lost the spring that goes in the tensioner (white plastic part). But the laser assembly still moves so I think it's ok? I'm going to put the old laser in to see if it still works like it did before.

Old laser just bounces back and forth like 1 mm. Still can't open disc tray.

I tried a different game on the new laser and it does the same thing.

Hm...

First of all , post smaller photos next time. Secondly... is very blured. Third.... never, never, touch the laser lens. The way you hold the laser has risk of touching it and get it dirty in that way. Clean it with a ear tip, if that doesnt make difference, pot tweak it.

yeah, i didn't realize this forum doesn't have picture resizing.

how am i supposed to touch it? the lens is just the glass-like thing on top? i never touch that. i do my best to just hold the plastic on the sides.

cleaned the laser, tweaked the pot down to 3.3k -- nothing.

games that used to work with the old laser don't work any more.

i'm thinking either i messed up a cable or something else isn't right. it almost looks like the laser is moving up and down under the disc when it's trying to read it. and the disc tray still won't open.

i couldn't get clear pics. my iphone, camera, and palm pre all turn out blurry when trying to focus on such small details.

here's a pic of the laser, it's still blurry but you can almost make out where i took too much off of the bridge http://i55.tinypic.com/33pd9iu.jpg

is there anything i can look for to confirm if the cables are damaged or not? would a multi-meter be able to test them somehow?
