DUDE can this be used on a regular xbox 360 thats not modded and soon to be xbox live supported. This thing sounds great. Although dual layer dvds are as low as 50 cents per disk this still sounds pretty damn cool!!!
As far as "modded" or not, to the Xbox this would appear the same as a firmware flashed DVD drive. I haven't kept up on things, but if it's possible to currently be "stealth" with backups on a flashed drive, this could also be equally stealthy. You still would have to void the warranty to install it.

!!!!! I wonder if this will ever be able to launch homebrew.... Never thought I would see anything like this!
No. See above.
QUOTE(dragoscojan @ Apr 25 2011, 06:56 PM)

so how many really?
There's no reason to believe it's not nearly all 360 games and 360-compatible originals. I expect there will be some initial bugs, but the released information implies upgradeability, so those being fixed over time is not a major stretch.

and since the beta 2.0.13141 dash can flash the dvd drives,i think this device can be easily made useless with a dashboard update.
See above, if it can be upgraded it can remain equal to a flashed DVD drive. Since it's good practice for flashed drive users to hold back on dash updates anyways, assuming the company behind the device is timely with their updates I wouldn't anticipate this being a problem. It could also possibly emulate older drives which the dash does not flash.

hmmm hard to believe...
You're right to be skeptical, this is the console mod community after all, but it's not like they're claiming anything infeasible. SATA device emulation is not exactly rocket science, for the most part it's just following the spec and returning the data desired. If you've ever used Daemon Tools or similar, it's doing the same thing entirely in software (though it emulates SCSI rather than SATA to my knowledge [though that gets to be a strange distinction since both PATA and SATA CD-ROM drives use ATAPI to encapsulate SCSI commands on ATA]).

The key word is Linux. We can probably reverse engineer the firmware and run it of our computers. Once the linux OS is dumped then there's no way for M$ to shut it down.
My best guess is that this is an ARM or MIPS processor of some sort running Linux connected over a decently high speed bus to a FPGA which handles the majority of the SATA interface. It may have Linux operating the user-facing bits, but the loader application and the FPGA code (if I'm right) will likely be closed source. Here's hoping I'm wrong on that. In any case though, it will require custom hardware and likely is running custom software compiled for a processor that's not x86, so running the firmware on a normal computer is very unlikely.

i must say incredible news i bet ms rues the day they allowed usb removable media to be formatted to/by the 360 filesystem...with that said this has to be $100 n up...wonder if there method can be reversed...and here i remember laughing at a thread here about emulating the 360rom drive my apologies that fellow was right all along...
This has nothing at all to do with the official USB removable media support. The USB drive does not get plugged in to the console, but in to the box that now sits between the motherboard and the DVD drive.

My only qualm about this thing is it seems presumptuous that it would work after this new dashboard drops.. Unless they are planning to release after it drops and after testing....
See fourth response.
QUOTE(sminitis @ Apr 25 2011, 08:49 PM)

that means we can load isos from an external hard drive?
Whether it would be entirely that simple has yet to be determined, but that's the basic idea. The process for getting the backups on to the hard drive may be a bit more complicated than just dragging the image over, but as far as I can tell there's no reason it has to be so it may in fact be just that easy.

I'm surprised no one asked if they could be banned for using this... lol.... Very interesting device.
And in case anyone is wondering, as noted in the first response, the 360 would see this exactly the same as a flashed DVD drive. They'd detect it in the same way and ban for the same reasons. It could also be stealthed in the same ways. If all current protections are properly emulated, it should be equal to a good firmware.
