No Error Code On A 3rrod
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:16:00 PM »

Edit:

Though Can't edit, just figured out I needed to hold sync button to read out error codes.

Error code is 0013 which reads out to be E07 Ram Overheating apparently, so I will look a bit more indepth to this but doens't really make sense since nothing is booting up or able to overheat.

You can buy mini heatsinks for the Xbox and see if that works, and 12volt fan mod it.
http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=637955
Sometimes, even if it means overheating, could need a re-flow. If the mini heatsinks, and 12volt fan mod doesnt work, try to re-flow, many people one the forum will do for pretty cheap.
and here are the heatsinks.

So right now I am looking at doing a Oven Reflow and I feel fairly safe doing so since its just the RAM and may as well keep the GPU and CPU exposed to the reflow also to eliminate that possibility, since its hard for me to figure out which RAM is causing the issue with the heatsinks on I was just going to reflow the board and install heatsinks, but raises the question how do I heatsink the RAM intelligently placed under the GPU but not linked to the GPU heatsink but instead insulated?

And for reflowing RAM on the bottle of the board require it to be positioned differently for it to take better effect if they are the culprit, and do they need to be included in the heatsinking when reassembling, aka penny trick just minus the pressure.

I would double check your error code and make sure its not 0003 instead of 0013.  It would make more sense as to why it is not powering on.

the cases it is a cold be solder joint under one of the RAM bricks though.
It is also said to be an indicator for RAM overheating but this is extremely rare

I understand the logic behind how to slowly died, and RAM overheating but why is that the Error code under a 3RROD?  I've only seen that case in 2RROD.

hello i highly doubt i can help you as i am a complete idiot  biggrin.gif  but, i suggest putting pressure on each of the ram bricks and powering it up each time. So add some firm pressure and try to power it up for each ram, and check the error code to see if you can get it to change. Also check around the areas for a broken trace and or missing capacitor resistor blah blah blah. If none of the above works try to do a oven reflow although i dont reccomend it at all, but some people have great luck with it and you might to.

I'm going to try this soon, just wasn't 100% sure if it also was possibly one of the ones under the GPU Heatsink?

we always reflow the faulty ones, we don't touch whatever is working already.

The small chips are easy to reflow. Ive just replied to someone else post with this method. it has work on every Xbox I have repaired.

You need liquid flux and a soldering torch

put the board at a slight angle, suck a small amount if liquid flux into a syringe
drip the flux slowly across the top edge of the IC in question, keep dripping the flux until you see it running from the bottom side of the IC. Leave it for a fe mins, use soldering torch on the IC for about 30 second until you see the flux bubble from the sides of the IC.

My description is really crap though, I am crap at explaining things. It works for me.

Semi good news, followed your directions roughly used a penny to help spead the heat, 2 actually, unfortunetly the flux I picked up was a paste, so I dissolved the most I could in some polypropanol,

It actually seemed to work, as the tiniest bit of heat evaporated the alcohol, and left the flux as residue....  Now it ran ok in just a quick test, booted up, etc, never had a display attached.

But now I attached it to my TV downstairs after all of this green lights, boots up, I popped a game in then fiddled with the TV to get the right signal showing up.  During this I missed the visuals of the launch and menu, unfortunetly, because what I saw when I get it was a crazy amount of artifacting, so I shut it off and tried to restart, 3RROD again, new code this time. 0020, so about to go look that up.

Mistakes I could have made Flux is still under the second RAM chip and not melted, not sure if I melted the first one enough, I stopped when I saw this flood of liquid spill out from under the RAM chip.

Re: 0020, sounds like a RAM error and seems right up there with Artifacts, so not sure if it is because of the cold solder being broken on the first one, or if it is flux bridging a solder on the second one x.x going to have to give her a blow again, just scared of melting the IC's
