Oven Fix Toxic Fumes
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:06:00 AM »

Scenyx noob here. Firstly I'd just like to say thanks to all those who have provided re flow tutorials on this site. They are great and have helped me repair half a dozen xbox 360s or so.

The oven fix seems to be the most reliable (non-professional) xbox re flow method available but I was wondering if anyone knows that if by baking an Xbox it releases any harmful chemicals into the oven? Which is also used for cooking food believe it or not (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Even with lots of ventilation im sure some of the fumes will reside in the oven after baking an xbox...
Just a bit nervous about cooking carcinogenic fumes into my food.

You could clean the oven?
I did the oven reflow about 3times and nothing stayed there, i just had a fan running by the window just incase.
If you want you can just send your console to someone for reflow if your afraid the oven is going to get messed up with chemicals.

this is another reason not to use a regular oven when reflowing. the small toaster oven i use is dedicated specifically to electronics. most solder releases fumes that arent good to inhale and if you cook in the same oven you reflow in then those same fumes are getting in your food.

Thanks for the advice.

What sort of a toaster oven is it ndrew2505? Im not even sure I know what a "toaster oven" looks like but it sounds like something I might invest in.

Thanks.

try to find one that has quartz elements in it. the quartz elements heat up alot quicker than regular metal elements. regular elements(just like your oven) heat up too slowly and you can risk damaging your board or not getting the solder to melt. the tut below has the times you can use but i shorten all the cycles except the last one where your actually melting the solder.

if your going to be relowing ps3's(phats especially, not sure the mobo size on slims) your going to need a pretty big one. phat ps3 mobo's are about 9.5x12.5" in size.
