Unremovable Bridged Pads On Mainboard
« on: November 27, 2010, 09:03:00 PM »

So i removed a gpu on a board so that i could reball it. The lift was successful and after watching the video from felix the cat i felt comfortable i proceeded with chip cleaning and then cleaning of the mainboard. I used amtech 559 to remove the solder and then braid.

I think either my iron was too hot which was 450c instead of 350c to remove the old solder balls or i was too aggressive with the iron and braid. Well anywho this is the result, and i cannot seem to get them removed.

Dont mind the flux mess i will take care of that in the future. Plus the acetone works wonders.

That's a mess, you've removed a lot of the green varnish from the traces. It's possible those pads were connected together by traces and you've just exposed them. I did something similar to the center BGA pads which are all interconnected in groups. It might be hard to reball that without shorting some of those little traces around the pads.

What is that brown flux anyway, I've received some boards that looked like they had the same junk applied?

i never used solder braid to clean the solder on pads. just brush enough BGA solder paste on it then using a flat but knife shaped solder iron gently move the iron , that will do the job. solder braid may damage the pads or coating.

Some of the traces in the FSB area look like they have lifted off of the board. If you can clean it up well enough it might work but I would say your chances of resurrecting that board are very low
