I recently bought a RROD XBOX 360. It is a Opus with 7371 dash and has 2 RROD with secondary error code 0013. Within a few days I will reflow it (off course I will use flux). I’m gonna use a heatgun, or do you recommend other ways to reflow (like oven reflow)?

When the reflow is done I want to JTAG it and improve the airflow and cooling. I don’t need the DVD Drive. So my plan is to apply a CPU heatsink on the GPU and make a custom fan shroud (maybe with better fans). My only worry is that the two Ram chips that are RROD related aren’t covered by the CPU heatsink. So will this matter or do I have to place some little heatsinks on it?

Thanks in advance,

Things like heatsinks on ram chips are always possitive and with the price being so low, there is almost no reason to not do it.

The southbridge also gets really hot too.

The is only one chip that I heatsinked that doesn't get hot in this picture.

IMO oven reflow is better than a heatgun reflow but its still not gonna be a permanent fix.

Where do you get those heatsinks for the ram chips and how do you stick them on, with apoxy..?

Thanks,

BTW, I like to use the heatgun method and a flux pen.

Flux underneat the chip is always recommended when doing a reflow. The flux will get burt underneat the chip so doing another reflow in the future probably wont do anything anymore.

My last xbox went RROD after a reflow a few months ago. I pour alchol underneat the GPU and blow it dry using warm air hoping it will clean the old flux entirely. Did a heatgun reflow and still no luck. I know it was dead so I went ahead and remove the GPU completely. The old burnt flux is still there and there is no way another reflow would ever work with all the junk left underneat the GPU. Reball would be the only option in that state.

So I would say reflow with flux once and proper. Avoid getting any thermal paste underneat the chip as this would reduce the chance of successful reflow.
