Hdd Crashes

my xbox360 elite only plays when the hdd is out.when it boots up with hdd in,it stays at green screen then gives me a error e68. and if i put the hdd in while xbox is already booted, it crashes and gives me a black&white screen,please explain what is wrong and what o could do please.thank you
