Help Re-attaching Cap C4u1
« on: February 17, 2010, 02:24:00 PM »

hi,

i have a 3rrod - 0102 console with cap C4U1 missing underside of the board near the RAM.

i managed to get a cap off a dead board but cannot get the thing onto the new board. my soldering skills are pretty good but this is proving a job and a half.

does anyone have any usefull tips on how to do this?

thanks

Iain

clean off the pads first. Then apply a very small amount of solder just to one pad. Then while holding the cap with a pair of tweezers, heat up the pad you just put solder on and kinda drag one side of the cap onto the pad trying to keep the cap level with the board. If the cap is lifted after you soldered the one side, press down on it with the tweezers and reheat the pad again. Now with one pad soldered and the cap flat on the board, heat up the other pad and other side of the cap and apply solder and you are now a pro at soldering 0402 resistors and caps.

cheers mate i followed you advice and i think i re-attached the cap. the console is back running anyway so result.

doing this made me realise my soldering skills are better than i thought but my eyesight is worse that i though. old age probably.

thanks again.
