Strange Disc Unreadable Error
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:36:00 PM »

I have a Benq DVD drive which works fine in all 360's I have tried it in except one.

When the drive is flashed with the correct key and in the 360 with the problems it will give "unreadable disc", "open tray", and even freeze at times. When the drive is in any other 360 it works absolutely fine playing anything i give it.

So there has to be something wrong with the mainboard I'm assuming but I have no idea where to start.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Did you try switching out the DVD power and Sata cable as well?

Does it only happen on back-ups or also with retail discs?

I've tried switching out the power cable and sata cable, and it happens on all types of games. The specific issue to each game will happen over and over in the exact same place too, which is also weird.

UPDATE: Well I've ordered another drive to see how that works. They are cheap enough and it could just be somewhat of a compatibility issue.

I think you did the best choice. now be sure you inject your old drive's key to the new drive so it will be paired with your mainboard.

Thanks. I know all about this and have done it many times before. It's weird how this one console has the issues, and the drive works fine in other consoles.

Well i just received another drive and the same issue occurs. It turns out something to do with the xbox itself is causing "Disc Not Readable" errors.

Did you try to replace the SATA and power cables of your DVD? Also check if the pins on the DVD power socket or SATA socket on the mainboard, are OK or loose. I don't see any other reason to get this message otherwise. Also try to play without any memory card or HDD on your console.

Hey MadMax. Yeah I tried the sata and power cables from another unit that the drives definitely work on, and I touched up the solder on the connections to the mainboard to be sure. I can't imagine what is causing this. My only other theories are maybe a bad dash update, or even bad electronic components. I'll keep trying! lol

P.S. no memory card or hard drive is attached.
