Question About E73.
« on: January 18, 2010, 06:04:00 PM »

I recently picked up a console that has the E73 error. I've tried every single way I can think of to fix this thing from heatgunning, the oven bake, X-Clamp fix..etc..etc.. Basically, I've done everything to this board that has worked countless times on every other board I have repaired, all to no avail. I'm literally at my wits end with this thing.

What I'm curious about is if anyone has tried desoldering the actual ethernet port/jack and soldering on a new replacement one to try and solve this error? I'm willing to give it a go, and posses all the right tools, but I don't want to waste my time if this has been proven not to work.

Any help or serious input would be appreciated.

Thanks

E73 has been resolved by replacing the Ethernet chip itself with a new one. I think this is your way to go. Also in this case you will need some soldering skills to make the change.

Thanks MadMaxGR for the input. But I just successfully installed a new Ethernet chip (ICS chip) and I still have E73.

Anyone else have any input?

Thanks in advance.

Now this is interesting. After letting the board sit for a few minutes, I tried turning it on once more to check the secondary error code and it popped up an E74.

Time to heat gun again and see what the result is. Will keep this updated for those who are interested.

Well, after fixing the E74 error, it went right back to E73. So, I'm still stuck.

Ugh..

Hmm... strange indeed.... Check again all your soldering on the Ethernet chip, to be sure you did a clean job there. Also you didn't tell me if the new ethernet chip is actually brand new or a pull from another board. I recommend to purchase such chips from reliable sources and not from ebay, really. Anyway you must check as I said above and if you have spare brand new ethernet chip, replace it again. There is minor possibility the other one was DOA, or died when trying to get rid of the E74 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks for responding.

The Ethernet chip was brand new. I have a few on hand that I bought from a reliable source not too long ago. I've replaced them before without fault.

I've since tried two more chips to rule out the first one being faulty. And before soldering the second chip on, I removed the first one and
I made sure to heat gun the board to combat further errors -Such as, getting E74 again.

I let the board cool down for the 10 hours that I was at work today, came home and tried powering it up without the second Ethernet chip soldered on yet and this time it 3rr'd, secondary error code 1030. Which to my knowledge is the code for a dead Ethernet chip.  -Which is why I was originally asking if anyone had solved E73 by replacing the whole Ethernet jack, as I wasn't getting a bad reading of the chip itself.

Anyway, long story short,  I soldered on the second chip and let it cool for about an hour and still E73.
I then desoldered an Ethernet chip off of a working board that I know connected to Live! before it was banned, and soldered it to this board and still...you guess it...E73.

I'm about ready to give up and take it to this business across town that supposedly fixes this problems for $50, and if they can't fix it I pay nothing. It's either that, or chuck this thing like a Chinese star at a brick wall. It's taken a lot to hold back thus far (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Thanks again for the input, it was worth a try.
