Worth Trying To Save ?
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:19:00 AM »

Hey guys

I had an old RROD xenon. Was in Garage, till jtag hack came out. Recently x clamped, shroud mod, and 12v fan mod. ran for few days and got the rrod..

From the xclamp, I noticed that the gpu and cpu heat sink didnt get hot enough to seem like it melted any joints, but I just stuck to the directions. I would get two red likes 10 seconds into trying to bake the thing so something felt off.

Anyways, After teh rrod after fixing, I redid the fix, artic silver 5, and added to the ram as well. I actually did the bake thing correctly as it took 5 min from 3 rings to two, and then another two min on the two red lights, both heat sinks were hot. power on and where good to go, havent closed it up yet, just running with it all open.

Question is, I am considering putting all sorts of mods into this thing, such as tailsman fains, xcm core cooler, but was wondering is it worth the money ? I mean itll be around 50 60 bucks for all the parts. OR is it best to save up for an over priced jtagable 360 on craigslist ?

p.s

I am poor, and am willing to leave my 360 open with my house fan blasting on it.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

more then the financial reason, I am not a amazing soldering/modder guy. It took me like 20 hours to get this 360 homebrew capable...

There is no need to, it is mostly for aesthetical purposes. It would help to prevent anything to happen again but will not ensure it.

I am beginning to lose faith in the re-flow fix. I know, there are great success stories. There are great success stories with X-Clamp fixes too.

I would get the upgrades if you feel comfortable buying them. You could move some of them to a new Xbox if possible, so not all is lost.

I say, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Run it for as long as you can and save your money for a new box or the re-flow if it dies.

That shouldn't bother it. Just keep everything else away from it and don't leave it running for long unattended.

If you ever decide to heatgun it, be very careful. I destroyed mine... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)  I also initially tried the X-Clamps. Worked like a charm....for 10 days, then back to 0102. Then it got 0020 after I tried heatgun  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jester.gif)

If you're considering spending the money on aftermarket fans and are concerned with whether or not they are worth the money and whether or not you should spend that money to keep your 360 cool, then a good thread to keep an eye on is JFreezus's "New Temp Testing" he's showing some very interesting results as far as what really works to cool the 360 and what doesn't...

I would reflow, I used to "repair" 360s by baking them, and let me tell you, I recieved angry voicemails and got every single box back within 2 weeks. Baking, is junk... Since I switched to reflowing boxes w/heatgun & insolation. I have re-repaired all boxes, and more, and have yet to get one call about any of them, so I would call however i do it, a success. After you reflow the box, apply some arctic silver and let it run for a while before playing games. I usually watch an episode of star trek, or NCIS via my computer, that lasts about 45 minutes, then I play a game for an hour, and let it cool off. Once cooled I fire it back up and let a game run and hit buttons here and there, to keep the GPU going, it usually will tell me if a problems still exists.
